Default Buddle

Buddle Named Player of Week 02/08/04

Columbus Crew forward Edson Buddle was named Honda MLS Player of the Week by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA) for the week ending August 1, 2004 (Week 18). Buddle’s fourth and fifth goals of the season carried the Crew to a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Burn at Crew Stadium on Wednesday July 28th.

After a header from just inside the penalty spot hit the crossbar on a 37th minute corner kick, Buddle got his club on the scoreboard in the 38th minute after a Burn center back Cory Gibbs made a bad clearance and put the ball right on Crew midfielder Simon Elliott's foot. The New Zealand international’s quick pass into the box found an unmarked Buddle, who easily finished to open the scoring.

Five minutes later, in the 43rd minute, it was Elliott who again provided the service, lacing a perfect ball behind the defense on a volley from the right sideline. Buddle controlled the pass inside the left part of the box and calmly chipped the ball over an on-rushing Burn goalkeeper Jeff Cassar to give Columbus a two-goal advantage at the half.

“I thought Edson was strong tonight throughout the game,” Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis said after the game. “I thought Edson stepped up to the plate big time and a good response to a sub-par performance probably from Saturday night but he knew it, and he wanted to go out and make his stamp on the game, and he did.”

The 23-year old earns his second career MLS Player of the Week award (Week 1 - 2003), and is the second Crew player to win the award this year (Jeff Cunningham Week 11).

Buddle was an overwhelming choice for this week’s highest honors, ahead of teammates Amado Guevara and Cornell Glen of the MetroStars, and Joe Cannon and Antonio de la Torre of the Colorado Rapids. The Honda Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).

Default Sanneh nets Goal of the Week honor

Sanneh nets Goal of the Week honor

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Tony Sanneh earned Major League Soccer's Goal of the week honor for Week 24 in only his second match back in American top flight.

Sanneh’s injury time goal secured a 1-0 Columbus Crew win over the San Jose Earthquakes last Wednesday. He one-timed a Simon Elliott free kick a few moments into second-half stoppage time into the right corner of the netting. The goal was his first in MLS since his return from a six year stint playing in Germany.

Sanneh beat out Ronnie Ekelund, Alecko Eskandarian, Pat Noonan and Freddy Adu for the honor. He is the second Columbus player to earn the award this season behind Ross Paule who won in Week 21.

Default NY Times a late charge for Columbus

Late Charge by the Crew
By JACK BELL

Published: September 21, 2004

tight race in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference became even more cramped over the weekend as the Columbus Crew - riding a 13-game unbeaten streak - became the first of the eight qualifiers for the postseason, the MetroStars stumbled (again) and D.C. United won its second straight game (United has lost only once in its last seven matches).

Crew Coach Greg Andrulis, who seemed to be in danger of losing his job when the team started the season without a victory in its first five games, has presided over a late-season run sparked by the scoring of Edson Buddle (four goals against the MetroStars on Saturday), the steady midfield play of the veteran Ross Paule and the addition of defender Tony Sanneh. The Crew's run of 13 games without a loss is the longest by an M.L.S. team in one season. Los Angeles went 15 games without a defeat over two seasons, 1997 and 1998.

In the Crew's 4-2 victory Saturday, the erratic MetroStars - who went five games without a defeat in midseason, but have won only once in their last six games - twice took leads that lasted less than five minutes. Buddle, who is from New Rochelle, N.Y., impressed Bruce Arena, the coach of the United States national team, with his strength on the ball and scoring. Arena attended the match.

The next round of World Cup qualifying games is next month (Oct. 9 in El Salvador and Oct. 13 against visiting Panama), and Arena has a reputation for picking in-form players. Buddle and another young striker, Alecko Eskandarian of D.C. United, are now probably more than blips on the national team's radar. Each has scored 10 goals this season.

Eskandarian missed two games recently with a sprained left ankle sustained during training. "The team originally thought I broke the fibula," he said in a telephone interview. "I was upset about the injury, but it turned out being a good thing for me. I was able to take a two-week mental break and get my legs back."

Eskandarian, a striker with a lethal left foot, returned in style. He scored two goals in his first game back, a 3-0 victory over Dallas, and on Saturday scored off a nifty short corner kick (the first time United had converted in 62 corners) in a 3-1 victory over Chicago. On the play from the right corner, Eskandarian slid a short pass to the onrushing Jaime Moreno. Moreno touched the ball softly, leaving it outside the penalty area near the top of the box. Eskandarian, the No. 1 pick in the 2003 M.L.S. draft, hit a left-footed rocket that glanced off a defender and into the upper corner at the near post.

United has a 7-0-2 record when Eskandarian scores.

"I'm happy now because I think the coaches have confidence in me," said Eskandarian, who began the season sharing time with the rookie phenom Freddy Adu. "It was really tough for me dealing with the first month of the season. I felt I was playing well, but wasn't getting the time. But I kept my mouth shut."
