Crew Acquires Testo 20/02/04

Columbus Crew President and General Manager Jim Smith announced today that The Crew has acquired U.S. Under-23 National Team forward David Testo on loan from the Richmond Kickers of the Division II A-League. The Crew also has an option to purchase Testo's contract from Richmond at the end of the 2004 season. The acquisition was one of three discovery options the team has in 2004, while financial terms were not disclosed. He is currently with The Crew in Florida for spring training.

"I am happy that everything worked out for everyone involved," said Testo. "I walked into a good opportunity with Columbus and will get a fair chance to show my abilities. It is also nice to be staying close to the east coast and to be joining a young team with some good veterans. I am very excited."

Testo recently returned from Mexico where he was a member of the U.S. U-23 National Team that was attempting to qualify for the 2004 Olympics. The U.S. lost in the semifinals to host Mexico and did not qualify. The former North Carolina star appeared in three of the five games for the U.S. in final qualifying, starting two. Over the past two years, he has appeared in 13 games for the U-23 National Team, starting eight, and has tallied five goals and five assists for 15 points.

"David is a young player who is very versatile," said Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis. "He can play up top or out wide. He has already experienced the professional level and has just begun his international career. We feel we've added a player with a tremendous upside."

Testo ended his four-year college career after the 2002-03 school year and then spent the 2003 season with Richmond. His professional career started off on a high note as he was named the A-League Rookie of the Year after totaling 14 points on six goals and two assists. He was the third-leading scorer for Richmond while appearing in 28 games, 23 starts.

"We are pleased that the negotiations have been successfully completed and that we've added a young player of David's caliber to our roster," Smith said. "He is a talented player, with international experience, who we expect will help provide us with the attacking depth we were looking for."

The Arden, N.C. native spent his first two years of college at the University of South Carolina before transferring to the University of North Carolina for his junior and senior seasons. His junior season at UNC turned out to be memorable as he helped lead the Tar Heels to a 21-4 record and the 2001 College Cup title, beating Indiana 2-0 at Crew Stadium. He ended his college career with 74 points on 24 goals and 26 assists

U.S. U-20's Fall To Columbus 27/02/04

The U.S. Under-20s fell 1-0 to the Columbus Crew this morning at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to cap off their week-long training camp. During the second camp of the year for the U-20s, Thomas Rongen’s team played two other matches, falling to the Colorado Rapids 6-1 (Feb. 24) and tying the Crew 2-2 in an earlier match (Feb. 22).

After Columbus took the lead on a goal by Jeff Cunningham, the U.S. had its chances to tie, but couldn't find the back of the net. George Weah, Jr., who scored the tying goal against the Crew in their first match of the week, almost scored his second goal with the U-20s a few minutes after coming on for Jamie Watson. Chad Barrett served in a perfect cross to Weah who had gotten free from his marker, but he shot was off target.

Against the Crew earlier in the week, the Under-20s took the lead in the 3rd minute after receiving a through ball from Christian Jimenez after getting behind the Columbus defense and slotted home his shot past the a diving Matt Haefner. Columbus bounced back to take the lead with two goals in four minutes, getting one right before the half from Ross Paule in the 44th minute and the other two minutes into the second half from Jamal Sutton. The U.S. forced the draw in the 74th minute when Jamie Watson’s cross found George Weah, Jr, who beat Haefner, who was out of position after attempting to clear the service.

Two days later, the U-20s struggled against a superior Colorado Rapids squad that played extremely well and scored four goals in the first half en route to a 6-1 victory. Jordan Cila paced the Rapids with two goals, while David Castellanos, Chris Henderson, John Spencer and Zach Kingsley all added one.

The lone goal for the U.S. came from midfielder Mariano Arrua in the 63rd minute after the Rapids had taken a 5-0 lead. The goal started as Danny Szetela dribbled down the right wing and found Jamie Watson near the six-yard box, who hit a one-timer on goal that ‘keeper Scott Vallow got a piece of. Vallow’s save deflected off the post and landed to the feet of Arrua, who easily knocked the ball into the net.

Scoring Summary:
CLB - Jeff Cunningham

USA – Justin Hughes; Nathan Sturgis, Karl Schilling (Aaron Hohlbein, 46), Jonathan Spector, Tim Ward (Steve Curfman, 46); Jay Denny (Adam Sloustcher, 46), Mariano Arrua (Christian Jimenez, 46), John DiRaimondo (Greg Folk, 56), Danny Szetela; Jamie Watson (George Weah, Jr.), Rodrigo Hidalgo (Chad Barrett, 46).

2. GREAT SCOTT? MLS has finalized an agreement with Costa Rican striker Erick Scott, who scored a goal Wednesday night as Alajuela thrashed San Jose, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Scott will play on loan with Columbus as a transitional international, so he will not count against the limit of three senior internationals per team. He turns 23 in May.

Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid had inquired about Scott in January, but changed gears when Carlos Ruiz's loan deal fell through and U.S. international Jovan Kirovksi became available.

Scott is a member of both the Olympic and national teams. He scored twice in last month's CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers and played last summer in the Gold Cup. He also played for Costa Rica at the 2001 World Youth Championship and scored a pair of goals.

The Confidential learned of the Scott deal two weeks ago but under a gentleman's agreement held the information until it appeared in the Costa Rican press this week.

3. ANDRULIS RANT: Crew coach Greg Andrulis briefly berated stadium officials last week when sprinklers went off prior to a training match against Barcelona's 'B' team.

Sprinklers began spraying water on the side of the field on which the Crew players were warming up. Andrulis roared and shouted for about 15 seconds, whereupon the sprinklers on the other side of the field came on and the Barcelona players continued their warmups unmindful of spouting water.

Fields are lightly watered by many European teams shortly before kickoff to provide a slicker, faster surface, and U.S. coach Bruce Arena has stated many times his players prefer such conditions. The ball is less likely to stick and players would rather not slide-tackle on a bone-dry field.

The Crew beat Barcelona B, which plays in the Spanish Second Division, 4-0. As a result all visiting teams will be sprinkled during pregame warmups when they play at Crew Stadium this season.

Just kidding.

"Erick [Scott] is a very young and talented player with a tremendous upside. He will be a good complement to both Jeff Cunningham and Edson Buddle and gives us some great attacking options."
-- Columbus coach Greg Andrulis on Costa Rican sigining Erick Scott, 22, who arrives from Alajuela, for which he has scored more than 40 goals since 2001. Scott has also played for Costa Rica.

Saw this earlier in the weekend. Could be a good signing for Columbus.

"Columbus Crew Stadium has been a great home for soccer and for the U.S. national teams. They've hosted a number of important games, and we've had great success there. We know that fans from all over the country will find their way to Columbus to support us, and it is the perfect venue for us to begin our World Cup journey."
-- U.S. coach Bruce Arena upon the announcement that Crew Stadium will host the USA's first qualifier for the 2006 World Cup when the USA meets Grenada, Sunday, June 13 in the first-leg of their two-game qualifying series.
