Columbus had a very nice draft -- along with some good signings/trades. I'm cautiously optomistic. 8)

The Crew also has three discovery picks at its disposal, up one from last season. Yesterday, the Crew submitted its first: Richmond Kickers and former North Carolina midfielder/forward David Testo.

Also, midfielder Brian West, who is no longer under contract, informed the Crew that he has signed a two-year deal with Norway’s Fredrikstad.

Wow West gone. He was misused at times, but I also felt he was lacking in commitment some times. Just my opinion.

4. ASSISTANTS, PLEASE: John Murphy is leaving the Revs to join the Crew coaching staff, Steve Morrow is pondering an offer to work in Dallas as Colin Clarke's assistant, and former U.S. international John Harkes might be joining the D.C. United staff.
Murphy also interviewed for the Dallas job, which Morrow reportedly turned down initially. Arsenal, one of Morrow's former clubs, has contacted him about working for its youth academy.
Harkes has been considering a move into the coaching ranks for the past few months. He worked last season as a studio analyst on "MLS Wrap."

Crew Re-Signs Denton 29/01/04
Columbus Crew President and General Manager Jim Smith announced today that defender Eric Denton has signed a multi-year contract that will keep him in Columbus through the 2005 season and beyond. Per league policy, no terms of the contract were disclosed.
"From the beginning, Jim (Smith), Greg (Andrulis) and I were on the same page and we were able to get together and come to an agreement that was the best for everyone," said Denton. "Columbus is where I wanted to play. I've bounced around a little bit and Columbus is a place where I feel very comfortable. It's been a great two years here. The team, the fans and the organization are first-class."
The 2003 season was Denton's second year in Columbus and his fourth MLS campaign overall. He was named the team's ADT defender of the year after scoring a career-high two goals, to go along with one assist. The Manteca, Calif., native played in 26 games, including 25 starts.
"Re-signing Eric was clearly one of our priorities this offseason and we are pleased that has been accomplished," said Smith. "Eric is a bright young talent who keeps getting better and we are delighted that he will remain an important part of our team."
The former Santa Clara University Bronco has appeared in 89 career MLS games, starting 80. He has four goals and 10 assists for 18 career points. The left-footed Denton began his MLS career with D.C. United (2000-2001) before playing a half season in Tampa Bay (2001). He was acquired by The Crew in the 2002 Dispersal draft after Tampa Bay was contracted following the 2001 season.
"Eric Denton was one of our most valuable players last year," said Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis. "He was a versatile key for us on the left side of our formation and I am thrilled that we'll be able to continue to count on his contributions for years to come

Crew Acquires Barclay from United 30/01/04
Columbus Crew President and General Manager Jim Smith announced today that The Crew has acquired forward/midfielder Devin Barclay from D.C. United in exchange for future considerations.
"This is a great opportunity, and a great organization," said Barclay. "I am very excited. I want to step in and hopefully make an impression. I've always been an admirer of the organization and seen it as the best when it comes to the fans and the effort the team always gives on the field."
The 20-year-old Annapolis, Md., native has registered three goals and two assists in 38 league appearances (15 starts) over his three-year MLS career with Tampa Bay, San Jose and D.C. He has also appeared in one playoff game.
"We're excited to have Devin join the team," said Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis. "He is a very versatile young player who we think still has a bright future. He can play any of the attacking positions and he gives us depth where we need it."
As a rookie, Barclay scored three goals and added two assists in 23 games with the Mutiny. The Nike Project-40 signee was originally acquired by Tampa Bay in the second round (14th overall) of the 2001 SuperDraft before being selected 9th overall by the Earthquakes in the MLS Dispersal Draft in January 2002. He was acquired by D.C. in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. Barclay has also represented the United States National Team at the U-23, U-20 and U-18 levels.
Barclay is expected to join The Crew at the start of February when the team reports for camp.
