Exeter in deep S***
Exeter could find themselves in more hot water with the Conference after being charged with breaching their rules into the eligibility of players.
Exeter have been charged with signing a player after having a transfer embargo imposed last August.
They are also alleged to have back-dated the date Dwayne Lee signed from Rymans League side Yeading to prior to the date the embargo was imposed.
The St James' Park club have until Monday to respond to the charge.
If Lee is deemed to have been ineligible to play, then Exeter face losing all the 36 points they have won during games he has played and they also face a fine of up to £1,000.
Exeter, relegated from the Nationwide League last season, are already facing a points deduction from the Conference for going into administration.
Exeter City is being victimised in an attempt to get it to drop its petition against the Conference
An Exeter City statement
The initial 12 points deduction has been reduced to 10 following a change in the Conference rules to fall in line with the Premiership and Nationwide League.
The Grecians are challenging the points ruling in the courts.
If Exeter were to lose a total of 46 points they would be left with just two points and facing almost certain relegation.
However, City believe they will be cleared and claim the charge has been made in response to the legal action the club is taking.
A statement on Exeter's website said: "Once again Exeter City finds itself in a position where it must defend itself against serious charges brought against it by the Conference.
"It is amazing that this relates to the registration of a player in August 2003 and has only come to light now and, more to the point, after the issue of the club's petition against the Conference.
"The conclusion must be, therefore, that Exeter City is being victimised in an attempt to get it to drop its petition."
It added: "The Conference statement is to the effect that the matter will be investigated thoroughly and Conference rules will be enforced in a fair and impartial manner.
"It is our belief that should fairness and impartiality prevail, Exeter City will take the opportunity to establish that it is not in breach of the rules."
