Colchester United have secured the services of Kevin Lisbie after the 28-year-old concurred on personal terms at Layer Road.

The former Charlton man has been training at Colchester all summer following his release from The Valley at the close of the past campaign.

Lisbie spent 12 years at Charlton, in a long-lasting association that also included loan spells at Derby, Norwich, Queens Park Rangers, Reading and Gillingham.

The 28-year-old will line-up alongside fellow new boy Teddy Sheringham, in what should prove to be a fruitful partnership of pace and guile.

Last season's 49-goal partnership of Chris Iwelumo and Jamie Cureton left the club over the summer.

U's sign Bhoys full-back

Colchester United have signed Adam Virgo on loan from Celtic.

Virgo has moved to Layer Road on a six-month deal after struggling for opportunities with the Scottish champions.

Since joining Celtic from Brighton in a £1.5million deal two years ago, the full-back has made just 12 appearances.

He spent last season on loan at Coventry City and has now returned to the Championship with Colchester.

Virgo, who had also been wanted by Motherwell, could make his debut for Geraint Williams' side in Saturday's home game against Barnsley.

Colchester v Barnsley Preview

Colchester will be without striker Clive Platt (suspension) for the visit of Barnsley to Layer Road, but Teddy Sheringham is available after sitting out the midweek Carling Cup defeat to Shrewsbury.

Kevin Lisbie (ankle) and Jamie Guy (thigh) are both doubtful, while Kevin Watson is still recovering from an Achilles injury.

Simon Davey has reported a clean bill of health as Barnsley look to get their season on track following the 4-1 defeat to Coventry on the opening day of the season.

But new signing Kim Christensen will only feature if Barnsley receive international clearance in time for kick-off.

Colchester chase Hibs star

Skysports.com understands Colchester are lining up a move for Hibernian forward Dean Shiels.

The former Arsenal youngster is thought to be considering his future at Easter Road as he is well down the pecking order in John Collins' plans.

Shiels has so far failed to feature for Hibs this season after struggling to establish himself in the side last term.

A number of clubs have been keeping tabs on Shiels' situation at Hibs and Colchester are now thought to be ready to make a move for the Northern Ireland international.

Colchester boss Geraint Williams is in the market for a new forward after losing last season's top scorers Jamie Cureton and Chris Iwelumo over the summer.

Williams is believed to be a big admirer of Shiels and is ready to offer him the chance to make the switch to Layer Road.

Colchester goalkeeper Dean Gerken is available after serving a one-match suspension although deputy Aidan Davison kept a clean sheet against Preston last time out.

Clive Platt serves the last of his three-game ban so Kevin Lisbie and Teddy Sheringham continue up front while midfielder Kevin McLeod (groin) could return.

New Burnley signing Alexander is expected to make his bow for the Clarets following his shock move from Preston this week.

Steve Cotterill is hoping to have Jon Harley (illness) and Michael Duff (abductor) available, but Gabor Kiraly remains a doubt and Besart Berisha is out with a knee injury.

Colchester lost their unbeaten record as they went down 3-2 to Burnley at Layer Road.

The U's were always on the back foot as Alan Mahon (15) fired The Clarets ahead before Andy Gray doubled their lead (29).

Kevin Lisbie brought the home side back into it on the stroke of half-time, before a Gray penalty on 63 minutes restored Burnley's two-goal advantage. Adam Virgo fired home late on, but the visitors held on for victory.

Colchester manager Geraint Williams has described stories of young defender George Elokobi leaving the club as "speculation." The Championship side have seen several players leave Layer Road in the past few months and their manager is keen to stress that Elokobi is going nowhere. The 21-year-old full-back has played in each of Colchester's Championship games this season, but has been linked with Scottish champions Celtic.

Clive Platt returns from a three-match suspension for Colchester, but Geraint Williams may decide to stick with Kevin Lisbie and Teddy Sheringham up front.

Kevin Watson (Achilles) is unlikely to be risked despite playing for the reserves in midweek, while Karl Duguid could replace John White at right-back.

Alan Pardew has confirmed the treatment room at Charlton is now empty, but Luke Varney is not likely to start after recovering from an ankle injury.

The game could also come too soon for Matt Holland, who returned to training on Thursday.
