Carroll joins Preston

Newcastle striker Andy Carroll has joined Preston on loan and he claims he turned other clubs down in order to move to Deepdale.

The 18-year-old has agreed a temporary six-month contract with the Championship outfit as manager Paul Simpson looks to bolster his strike options.

Carroll, who has made seven first-team appearances for Newcastle, has admitted he did not hesitate in joining Preston.

"I was given a few clubs to choose from, but when I was looking at them Preston looked like the right move," Carroll told Preston's official website.

"They seemed like the right team for me and I thought that I'd fit in well.

"There's a few good players here and hopefully I can get on well with them.

"Obviously I'm delighted with the move and I just want to play some games and get some goals under my belt.

"I hope I get some goals down here so that I can show everyone that I can do it."

Carroll could make his first Preston appearance in Tuesday night's Carling Cup fixture with Morecambe.

"I'd just like to play my best all the time and play every week," Carroll added.

"It would be a great start to get a goal against Morecambe and I just hope that I can get on, play well, and win the game."

Preston v Colchester match preview

Patrick Agyemang and Brett Ormerod are expected to be involved this weekend despite struggling with hip and knee injuries respectively.

Midfielder Kevin Nicholls will retain his place in the side after proving his fitness following the knee problem he sustained in the defeat by West Brom last time out.

Colchester goalkeeper Dean Gerken is suspended after his red card against Barnsley last weekend so veteran Aidan Davison is expected to be handed the gloves.

Striker Jamie Guy's thigh injury is not as bad as first feared, but although the youngster will travel to Deepdale he is not expected to be named in the squad.

Preston have sealed the loan signing of Blackburn's Paul Gallagher on deadline day. Gallagher, who will stay at Deepdale for the next six months, goes straight into Preston's squad for Saturday's game at Coventry.

North End have made a poor start to their Championship campaign and there have been reports of certain players being unsettled. According to some rumours, there was a dispute between Simpson, former skipper Graham Alexander and vice-captain Paul McKenna over tactics and training methods. But Simpson maintains there has never been any divide between any of the senior figures at Deepdale.

Preston boss Paul Simpson has a near full-strength squad to choose after reporting no new injury concerns.

Wayne Henderson missed the 2-1 defeat to Coventry with a back strain but is expected to return in place of Andy Lonergan. Paul McKenna is Preston's only absentee with a long-standing groin problem.

Francis Jeffers and Wade Small (both calf) could both come back into the Sheffield Wednesday side, while Kenny Lunt and Yoann Folly are also pushing for recalls.

The Owls have lost their opening four games of the season but would climb above Preston with victory at Deepdale.

Preston goalkeeper Wayne Henderson may miss out again with the back injury that has kept him out for the last four games, and even if he is passed fit Andy Lonergan could be preferred between the posts.

Paul Gallagher (foot and ankle) is in contention to play, while Paul McKenna is almost ready to return after abdominal problems.

Enoch Showunmi has returned to fitness following a leg injury to boost Bristol City, but he is likely to start on the bench.

David Noble has also travelled with the squad after shaking off a groin problem, meaning that Steve Brooker (knee) is City's only absentee.

Preston North End jumped out of the relegation zone in spectacular style with a 5-1 mauling of Southampton at Deepdale. Karl Hawley opened the scoring for Preston on 12 minutes, but Southampton were back level just after the re-start with a Billy Jones own goal (48). But Preston then ran out easy winners with goals from Darren Carter (58), Chris Sedgwick (75) and Patrick Agyemang (83 and 94).
