A fine first-half performance from West Brom saw them claim a 2-0 win over Barnsley.

The opener came on the half-hour mark and it was great effort from summer recruit Filipe Teixeira - who finished well after an excellent run.

The Portuguese midfielder then turned creator moments later, when he laid the ball off for fellow new signing Craig Beattie to fire home his first goal for the club.

Tony Mowbray is keen to give some of his fringe players a run-out, so changes from the team which beat Scunthorpe are expected.

Neil Clement, Paul Robinson and Bostjan Cesar are injured as The Baggies look to make home advantage count.

Cardiff have been boosted by the inclusion of Roger Johnson in the squad after the defender suffered a head injury in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Preston.

Paul Robinson, who missed West Brom's Carling Cup defeat to Cardiff with an ankle problem, has declared himself fit.

However, Roman Bednar suffered a setback in his bid to regain fitness when he complained of a sore back after a reserve outing.

QPR will be without Mikele Leigertwood for the trip to The Hawthorns, after the midfielder was sent off in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Watford.

Gareth Ainsworth (ankle) is likely to be fit, but Marc Nygaard (calf) and Michael Mancienne (back) are doubtful and long-term injury victims Simon Walton (broken leg) and Pat Kanyuka (thigh) are still some way from a return to action.

Baggies blast five past QPR

West Bromwich Albion comfortably took all three points netting five against struggling Queens Park Rangers at The Hawthorns on Sunday afternoon.

The Baggies dominated from the kick-off in their 5-1 win despite conceding their first goal at home this season, taking them to within one point of leaders Watford.

Ismael Miller, on loan from Manchester City, continually showed his strength making runs from his own half. He played a key role in West Brom's first goal when he floated a ball in from the left, leaving Kevin Phillips to tap it in for his fifth goal this season.

Miller was rewarded with a goal minutes later after West Brom won the ball deep in their half, swiftly passing to Phillips who played Miller through. He slotted the ball around Lee Camp amongst offside appeals in the Rangers defence.

The visitors managed to pull a goal back when a free-kick fell to Dexter Blackstock who rose well to head across goal into the path of Gareth Ainsworth.

But it was West Brom who kept the momentum and added another when Phillips struck the ball superbly from just inside the box, flying into the top corner over Camp's flailing hands.

Adam Bolder looked the liveliest for QPR late into the first half, and produced some good balls into the box, but it was not enough for them to get back into the game.

West Brom kept their dominance into the second half and on 56 minutes, Robert Koren smashed a fabulous goal in from 20 yards after poor clearance attempts by the away side.

Phillips looked determined to secure a hat-trick and seemed likely to after making a darting run into the box, but Camp stayed on his feet to distract the veteran striker who shot wide.

Jonathan Greening added the fifth goal for The Baggies halfway into the second half after poor defending from Rangers. He kept the ball low and belted it into the bottom right corner.

QPR's best chance of the afternoon came from Martin Rowlands. He made a darting run inside and struck it well, but Dean Kiely made his first save of the match, stretching to tip it over the crossbar.

West Bromwich have handed youngster Lee Baker a 12-month contract extension despite the fact he will miss most of the season through injury. A cruciate knee ligament blow means the 18-year-old is unlikely to kick a ball for the club again this season, as he requires at least eight months recovery. However, West Brom are keen to give Baker a chance and want to keep him for another year in order to see him in action once he is back to full fitness.

Chairman Jeremy Peace has quashed claims that he is gearing the club for a sale. Recent reports suggested Peace was increasing his own stake with a view to selling on for a profit. However, Peace has denied the claims, explaining that he has no plans of wasting six seasons worth of work.

"We wouldn't have invested £134million over the last six seasons if we were going to plunder the club for all it's worth," he told the Birmingham Mail.
