Davies gives up captaincy
Quote:
Curtis Davies has handed in the West Brom captaincy due to his desire to leave The Hawthorns.
The defender has seen a transfer request turned down by the Championship club, but remains keen to quit Tony Mowbray's side.
Davies has now decided to relinquish his role as skipper as he feels it would be 'hypocritical' to continue in the position.
"It would be hypocritical and unfair to my team-mates and the fans for me to be captain when I want to move on," said Davies in the Times.
"If we were promoted, I probably would not be seeking to move.
"But I need to be playing at the top level to improve myself against the best forwards in the Premier League."
Mowbray also confirmed Davies is no longer captain, with Jonathan Greening having been given the armband for the friendly with Hajduk Split.
"Curtis Davies has just got to try to concentrate on his football," said Mowbray in the Express & Star.
"Everybody's aware of his situation at the club, but at this moment in time Curtis won't be wearing the armband for this football club, but he will hopefully still be playing for it.
"It's been a joint decision. I talk to my players all the time and I think he's best having a clear head.
"When he's asked to play he just needs to get on with it and give his best for the team."
