Charlton forward Luke Varney has stepped up his comeback from injury by playing in a practice match. Varney, who arrived at the club in the summer from Crewe, has yet to feature for his new club because of injury.

Chris Iwelumo has insisted he did not dive against his former club Colchester on Saturday. The Scottish striker left Layer Road in the summer to join Charlton and he helped his new side claim a 2-2 draw in Essex. With the score at 2-1, Iwelumo was sent clear on goal - before going down under a challenge from Matthew Connolly - who received a straight red card.

Charlton v Leicester preview

Charlton striker Svetoslav Todorov is expected to recover from a leg injury and challenge for a place up front.

Right-back Yassin Moutaouakil is also fit following an ankle injury but Ben Thatcher and Matt Holland are short of match sharpness.

James Wesolowski is missing for The Foxes and will be sidelined for six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the Carling Cup victory over Nottingham Forest.

Clive Clarke, whose double heart failure caused the original tie at Forest to be abandoned, is also out, along with Elvis Hammond (ankle).

Charlton Athletic scored twice within the space of five first-half minutes as they beat Leicester City 2-0 at The Valley. Chris Iwelumo volleyed home the opener from close range (18) before playing a part in The Addicks' second, which was scored by Luke Varney.

Charlton boss Alan Pardew insists Jerome Thomas was dropped from his squad because of his training ground 'mindset' - rather than his arrest two weeks ago. Thomas did not figure in Charlton's squad that beat Leicester 2-0 in the Championship on Saturday, as the Addicks continue their march towards a Premiership return.

Luton Town v Charlton Athletic preview [Carling Cup]

Paul Furlong should lead the Luton line in the absence of Sam Parkin and Paul Peschisolido, both out with ankle injuries.

Don Hutchison and Keith Keane are also missing, while Dean Brill is expected to start in goal as Luton look to build on the second-round win over Sunderland.

Charlton boss Alan Pardew is set to freshen up his team, with Chris Powell, Danny Mills, Andy Reid and Chris Iwelumo tipped for a rest.

Matt Holland, Yassin Moutaouakil and Svetoslav Todorov may feature after injuries, while Paddy McCarthy, Sam Sodje, Therry Racon, Jerome Thomas, Izale McLeod and Darren Randolph may start.

Charlton youngster Josh Wright is set to complete a further month on loan at Barnet after impressing for the League Two club. The 17-year-old has helped Barnet to four games unbeaten in his first month at the club, and after getting the all-clear from Charlton, is staying until the end of October.

Alan Pardew insisted Charlton should have been awarded a penalty as they allowed the lead to slip away at Coventry. The Addicks went ahead through Lloyd Sam's goal in the 16th minute and felt they should have had a spot-kick when Luke Varney was brought down by Ben Turner. But referee Neil Swarbrick waved play on and the home side went on to grab a late leveller through Carling Cup hero Michael Mifsud.

Charlton v Barnsley match preview

Lloyd Sam's three-match suspension for Charlton could mean a recall for winger Jerome Thomas.

Svetoslav Todorov could well be given the nod by Alan Pardew ahead of either Luke Varney or Chris Iwelumo in attack.

Barnsley were battling against the drop last term, but three wins of their last five means they are 4th in the table.

Manager Simon Davey has no fresh injuries to contend with for the trip to The Valley, with Istvan Ferenczi (ankle) still unavailable.

Charlton 1-1 Barnsley

Charlton lost ground on Watford at the top as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Barnsley. The Addicks looked to have snatched all the points with just eight minutes remaining as Zheng Zhi headed home. But Barnsley - themselves flying high in the top five - fought back and grabbed an equaliser in the final minute through Kim Christensen. The Tykes could and should have won it in stoppage time but Grant McCann fired wide from point-blank range.

Cheltenham have signed Charlton's Dean Sinclair on an emergency month-long loan. Sinclair only moved to The Valley in the summer from Barnet - but he is yet to make his league debut and has been allowed to move to Whaddon Road.

Charlton have denied Zheng Zhi permission to play in China's upcoming World Cup double-header against Burma. Zheng would have missed three Championship games for The Addicks had he been allowed to travel. Charlton boss Alan Pardew feels China have the ability to cope without their star midfielder for the double-header.

Charlton 1 Plymouth 2

The result of the night came at Charlton as Plymouth claimed a 2-1 success at The Valley.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's early strike fired The Pilgrims ahead, but it did not last as Charlton hit back.

Danny Mills' long-range strike hit the post before rebounding off Plymouth keeper Luke McCormick into his own net.

Barry Hayles restored Plymouth's lead and they withstood great second half pressure to keep Charlton out.
