Wolves hero passes away

Derek Dougan, the former Northern Ireland and Wolves striker, has died at the age of 69.

Born in Belfast, Dougan started his career with Distillery before getting his first taste of football in England with Portsmouth.

He went on to play for Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, Peterborough United and Leicester City before joining Wolves in 1967.

During a successful spell at Molineux, Dougan scored 123 goals for Wolves and was also part of the team which won the 1974 League Cup.

Dougan was also chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association and was noted as being an outspoken figurehead of the organisation.

On the international scene, Dougan made his debut for Northern Ireland at the 1958 World Cup finals and spent 15 years in the national setup.

He scored eight goals in 43 appearances for his country and linked up well with Manchester United legend George Best.

A Wolves spokesperson said: "We are very saddened to hear of the death of one of the most talented players ever to wear a Wolverhampton Wanderers shirt."

Very saddened to hear this although he was well before my time.

Always knew of him and how he was a legend for this club but in the past 24 hours it's really hit home.

RIP Doog, you little legend.
