Default Sir Bobby President of Ipswich Town

Quote:
Former Town manager, Sir Bobby Robson CBE has been given the honourary title of President of Ipswich Town.
Sir Bobby Robson, now working for the Republic of Ireland as Steve Staunton's advisor, is the first person to be awarded President status of the club since the late Lady Blanche Cobbold, who passed away in 1987. The former England manager won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, during his 13 year tenure as manager of Ipswich Town.

Mr Robson, speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, was delighted to accept the role, saying: “I'm extremely flattered to have been asked to become the President of Ipswich Town. “David Sheepshanks reminded me that the last person to hold the position was Lady Blanche Cobbold, so I feel immensely privileged to take on this honorary role from the wonderful Cobbold 'dynasty.'

“Despite going on to manage England, Barcelona and Newcastle United, the 13 years in charge at Portman Road were among the happiest days of my managerial career.

“I still think of Ipswich Town as 'my baby' and always will. It gave me a great education in football and made me confident to face anything, it put me on the 'football map' so as you can imagine it is very close to my heart.

“I have kept in touch with the club since I left, particularly with David Sheepshanks and former chairman John Kerr and would like to thank them and with their fellow directors for this special honour.”

Ipswich Chairman, David Sheepshanks commented on the extroardinary achievments Robson lead the club to, he told the EADT: “Sir Bobby Robson is one of the great sporting heroes of our time. All those who support Ipswich Town hold him in high esteem and deep affection.

“His achievements at Portman Road between 1969 and 1982 were nothing short of remarkable.

“Some such expressions are over used in this day and age but Sir Bobby Robson is a true football 'legend' in his own lifetime. We are thrilled that he has accepted this honorary position.”

Robson will still remain in his North-East home and continue to work for the Republic of Ireland but will watch Town whenever possible and be used as an ambassador for the club. With a strong Irish contingent currently playing for the club, such as Alan Lee, Billy Clarke, Shane Supple and Owen Garvan, Sir Bobby may find himself combining his roles with Ireland and Ipswich.

The Club have also announced that David Rose, who retired as the club Secretary last year and was Robson's secretary, will take up the role of vice-president.
