Default Huckerby could be on his way into div 1!

Norwich look set to battle it out with West Brom for Manchester City striker Darren Huckerby.

The Baggies agreed a fee believed to be £750,000 for the forward, who has just completed a loan spell at Norwich, which the Canaries have now matched.

But Norwich boss Nigel Worthington is keen on the 27-year-old and told the club's website: "It was nice to be able to agree a fee with Manchester City.

"We've now got to be patient and see how it all pans out."

Norwich were keen on a move for the former Coventry, Leeds and Newcastle frontman but had indicated he was out of their price range.

But they moved quickly after fellow promotion-chasers West Brom had a bid accepted by Manchester City.

Baggies swoop for Horsfield
First Divison leaders West Brom are looking to increase their attacking options and had a bid for Wigan frontman Geoff Horsfield accepted on Monday.

Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace earlier told the club's official website: "We're pleased Manchester City have accepted our offer but it's not a done deal by any means.

"We still have to agree personal terms with Darren and his agent and there are other clubs interested in him."

Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan had signalled Huckerby would be given a chance in the Premiership after returning from Carrow Road.

He is keen on a move away from the City of Manchester Stadium as he believes his hopes of first-team football under Keegan are slim.

Wigan and Sheffield United had also shown an interest in Huckerby.

Huckerby has made just one first-team appearance for City this term, netting in a Uefa Cup qualifying tie with TNS back in August.

Manchester City striker Darren Huckerby looks set to hold talks with Norwich on Friday about a permanent move.

City have accepted bids of £750,000 from Norwich - where he has been on loan - and West Brom.

Manager Kevin Keegan said: "We have got a lot of forwards at the club. That's why I loaned him out to Norwich and he had a terrific time there.

"Providing they can come to some sort of agreement over personal terms I think that is where he will go."

Huckerby's agent had earlier said he may stay at Manchester City to fight for his place in Keegan's team.

Phil Smith said his client still thinks he is capable of playing in the Premiership.

"Darren hasn't decided that his future lies away from the club. He would like to play for City again," he said.

Smith added that with 18 months of the 27-year-old's current contract to run, any transfer would pose financial problems that would not be easy to overcome.

"If Huckerby was to leave Manchester City there are a few issues to be resolved," he said.

"It would also be very difficult for Darren to entertain a permanent move into the Nationwide League.

"We will speak to West Brom and Norwich in due course but we also believe there are other clubs interested in him who are operating at a higher level."

Norwich boss Nigel Worthington has made no secret of his interest: "It was nice to be able to agree a fee with Manchester City.

"We've now got to be patient and see how it all pans out."

Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace told the club's official website: "We're pleased Manchester City have accepted our offer but it's not a done deal by any means.

"We still have to agree personal terms with Darren and his agent and there are other clubs interested in him."

Keegan also signalled Huckerby will be given a chance in the Premiership after returning from Carrow Road.

He has made just one first-team appearance for City this term, netting in a Uefa Cup qualifying tie back in August.
