Talking Burkinshaw eyes top-flight status

Keith Burkinshaw believes Watford's sole aim next season should be to survive in the Premiership - if they win promotion this year.

Burkinshaw, who led Tottenham to two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup as manager, is assistant to Hornets boss Adrian Boothroyd.

Boothroyd's men sealed their spot in the Championship play-offs with a 1-1 draw against derby rivals Luton at the weekend, and they still have a slim chance of automatic promotion.

"We have to live within our budget and, should we get into the Premiership, the first season is all about survival," Burkinshaw said.

"If we manage that, we can push on. But we have to ensure we are strong enough to return to the Premiership if we come back down.

"That is something that many clubs haven't dealt with properly."
