Crewe manager Dario Gradi admits striker Steve Jones could leave Gresty Road in January.
The 28-year-old Northern Ireland international, who was linked with Watford in the summer, is out of contract at the end of the season and Gradi is yet to receive a response from Jones following talks.
Gradi, who has eight strikers in his first-team squad, believes a number of situations will be resolved by the end of the year.
"Everything will be sorted out at Christmas because I know we have a number of strikers on our books," he said. "I went over budget to bring the new faces in during the summer and we will have to decide what to do with them if some of them are not playing regularly.
"Steve is a little bit different because he is entering the final few months of his contract. We have offered him a very good contract and at the time I pushed it through with the board. As yet he hasn't gone back to the chairman to say he is accepting it or rejecting it, so we'll have to see.
"At the moment we can only assume that he could leave in the summer and of course there is a possibility that he could leave in January if a club was prepared to come in for him. Saying that I would much prefer if he stayed with us because he is a super guy and a goalscorer."
