Default Belmadi to leave?

Harry Redknapp fears he will not be able to keep Djamel Belmadi at Southampton on a long-term deal.

Belmadi joined Saints at the start of August on a one-month contract after impressing Redknapp during pre-season.

Prior to linking up with the Championship club, the Algeria international trained with Celtic and Sunderland, and was also courted by Wigan Athletic.

The 29-year-old has been a key figure for Saints as the club look to make a swift return to The Premiership.

The former Manchester City loan star wants to stay at St Mary's for the rest of the season but Redknapp is unsure if he will be able to fulfil Belmadi's wish.

"He keeps the ball and brings people into play," said Redknapp.

"I like people to keep the ball and use it, instead of running off and losing it, and he does that.

"He's only here short term, he's looking for a decent contract for a year and we'll have to see what happens but he's a good player.

"If we don't take him someone else will."

Algerian playmaker Djamel Belmadi has signed a permanent contract with Southampton.

Belmadi initially joined Saints on a one-month deal at the start of August, with a view to earning an extended stay at St Mary's.

Saints boss Harry Redknapp was fearful of losing the schemer to a Premiership club, with interest from the top flight having been shown in Belmadi.

But Belmadi has been happy to snub the chance of a switch to The Premiership after signing a one-year contract over the weekend.

The 29-year-old celebrated his deal with a sparkling display in the 2-0 win over Crewe Alexandra, in which he also scored.

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe confirmed that everything is in place for Belmadi to stay on the South Coast for the rest of the season.

Lowe said: "We have offered him a one-year deal which was all agreed even before Saturday's game."
