CHIVAS USA TO FACE THE SOUNDERS AT QWEST FIELD JUNE 2
Posted 3/16/2007
The Seattle Sounders today announced an exhibition game with Los Angeles based Chivas USA of Major League Soccer (MLS) on June 2, 7:00 PM at Qwest Field. The game was part of Chivas USA deal to acquire forward Maykel Galindo, who, after spending two seasons with the Sounders, moved on to the MLS club in early February.
Tickets to the Chivas USA match will go on sale April 2 through ticketmaster 206.628.0888 or TicketMaster.com. Reserved seating will be $20 and general admission $15 each. Sounders season ticket holders will be able to buy presale tickets starting March 26 only through the Sounders ticket office.
The match will also feature the Toyota of Seattle and Food Lifeline Food Drive competition between the Seattle Sounders and the Seattle Storm. Every fan who brings at least one non-perishable food item to the event will receive a free ticket to the June 28 Sounders match against Miami FC and the first 1,500 fans who participate in the food drive will receive a Sounders headband courtesy of U.S. Home Mortgage.
The match originally scheduled for June 2 against the California Victory has been moved to September 6 at 7pm at Qwest Field.
Chivas USA also bring former Sounders goal keeper, Preston Burpo as part of their line-up that includes Mexican International Claudio Suárez and newly acquired Amado Guevara along with one of MLS’s most prolific goal scorers, Ante Razov.
Suárez has appeared in three World Cups and has played for Mexico 178 times. His club career has included stints with Mexican First Division clubs Pumas, Tigres and Chivas Guadalajara.
Guevara made the move from Red Bull New York to Chivas USA this offseason. With Guevara running the show in central midfield, Chivas USA will look to maintain its winning tradition after the team's first playoff appearance in 2006. The native of Honduras has scored 32 goals in 103 MLS matches.
MLS’s third leading scorer, Razov, tallied 14 of his 98 career goals in his first year with Chivas in 2006. Razov won the MLS Cup and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups with the Chicago Fire and still holds the record as the Fire’s leading scorer.
The match will give Seattle fans their first chance to see new Chivas USA head coach Preki, who played with the Tacoma Stars indoor squad early in 1985 before he moved to England and played for both Everton and Portsmouth of the English Premier League.
The Chivas USA squad is only in its third year of existence, but has adopted a long history with its affiliation to Chivas of Guadalajara, one of the most decorated clubs in Mexican Futbol.
The rich tradition and fierce loyalty of Chivas Guadalajara fans has made Chivas USA a forerunner in American professional sports in terms of outreach to the Hispanic community. Their popularity with the Latino market was best displayed by this year’s Sueño MLS Series on the Univision network. Their ChivaKids and Fundación Chivas de Corazón groups are paving the way to make soccer experiences available for underprivileged children in Los Angeles.
