Own goal dooms Crew in loss to Chivas USA
A mental mistake in the 69th minute led to Chivas USA gaining a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday.Eddie Gaven redirected midfielder Francisco Mendoza's shot into his own goal, snapping a 1-1 tie and ending the Crew's unbeaten streak at six games. With its team set to become the Los Angeles Clippers to the LA Galaxy's Los Angeles Lakers as soon as David Beckham laces up his boots for the rivals, Chivas USA made one last case for Home Depot Center dominance when it put on an offensive showcase in the first half."It's good, it's great to be back home, playing at home, getting the three points tonight," Chivas goalkeeper Brad Guzan said. "Now we need to keep that going."Chivas (7-5-3) took eight shots in the first - four on goal - but missed several chances before taking a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Maykel Galindo blasted a shot which slid under Columbus goalkeeper Will Hesmer to the waiting foot of Ante Razov, who deposited it into the goal for his fourth tally of the season."I believe that Columbus is a very underrated team," Chivas coach Preki said. "As you might know, they have done very well in their last five, six games and haven't lost once and are playing very good."Columbus (5-5-7) did not need long to notch the equalizer, scoring a goal from inside the penalty area in the 23rd minute.Stefani Miglioranzi grabbed a feed from Guillermo Barros Schelotto and sent a header just beneath the crossbar past Chivas goalkeeper Brad Guzan to tie the game. The speedy Galindo shot just wide in the 36th minute and missed again in the 45th minute, when he could not get any power behind his header, creating an easy save for Hesmer."I feel that we had several chances that we should have put away," Preki said. "Their goalkeeper made at least two saves to keep them in the game. I gotta give them credit, they make it difficult, especially at the end, and we dealt with it and that's how we won.""For us, it's been a season of ups and downs, of injuries and guys being gone to different events at different times," Columbus coach Sigi Schmid. "We're hoping to get everybody back at the same time. Getting these people back will help us regain our momentum."

Chivas USA nip Crew on own goal
An own goal midway through the second half gave Chivas USA the deciding goal as they defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1 at The Home Depot Center on Saturday.
The game-winner came in the 69th minute when Francisco Mendoza knocked a ball toward goal from 22 yards out, taking a deflection along the way off Eddie Gaven inside the penalty area and past Will Hesmer into the back of the net. Ante Razov scored in the first half but Stefani Miglioranzi answered for the visitors.
Nevertheless, the victory puts Chivas in solid standing in the Western Conference. Still unbeaten at home, the Red-and-White are now seven points ahead of Colorado and moved to within six points of second-place FC Dallas. The Crew saw their six-match unbeaten streak come to an end.

Chivas back home, back to winning
Chivas USA had many happy returns on Saturday.
The club returned to The Home Depot Center after a brief two-game road swing with three starters back in tow and picked up yet another home victory as Chivas USA beat the Columbus Crew 2-1 on Saturday.
With the win, Chivas USA improved to 6-0-1 at home and tightened its grip on third place in the Western Conference table.
"Over the last two years, there's something about playing for these fans and something about playing for this club that everybody takes pride in," Chivas midfielder Jesse Marsch said. "Whether it's here and in Chicago, where we have a lot of our fans come out, you feel a responsibility to try and show that you have a lot of pride in the colors and you have a lot of pride in this team. I think there is an underlying feeling within the whole group about that."
Aside from the fervent following that showed up to cheer on Chivas USA, the group was boosted by the return of three U.S. national team players. Jonathan Bornstein missed the last six games because of Gold Cup and Copa America while Sacha Kljestan and Brad Guzan missed three because of Copa America.

Chivas see good and bad in break
With their 2-1 win against the Columbus Crew last Saturday, Chivas USA locked into third place in the Western Conference and are now just six points behind second-place FC Dallas. But the Red-and-White will have little opportunity to advance in the standings over the next five weeks. Chivas USA enter the lightest part of their schedule as the club has only two league games scheduled between Saturday's match against Columbus and an Aug. 18 match against Toronto FC.
Chivas USA hold a 7-5-3 mark, good for 24 points, and hold three games in hand over FC Dallas (30 points) and frontrunners Houston (33 points), but have played three more games than fifth-place Los Angeles (13 points).

Chivas tackles Seattle Sounders in U.S. Open

Chivas USA made history in the U.S. Open Cup last year, but for all the wrong reasons. Faced with what seemed like a relative lightweight in their first U.S. Open Cup match last year, Chivas USA instead became the first MLS team to lose to an amateur side as Roma FC of Dallas knocked the Red-and-White out of the tournament in a penalty kick shootout.
"It still bothers us a little bit," defender Lawson Vaughn said. "We try not to think about it because it's in the past and we can't do anything about it."
