WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"We would love to have them."
-- Tim LeFevour, the manager of Soldier Field, on the prospects of expansion
MLS franchise Chivas USA moving into the Chicago stadium in 2005. Chivas

Angeles or Chicago. (Chicago Tribune)

1. CHIVAS CHAT: Regardless of which city he picks for his MLS team,
Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara already has made money in America.
Tryouts for the Chivas training academies he plans to run at
locations in the United States have attracted tens of thousands of
participants.

At three days of tryouts held in Southern California in late March,
about 3,000 kids turned out each day and paid $50 apiece.

According to a source, he plans to market Chivas academies as a
franchise operation in U.S. locations. Local operators would pay for
the right to use the Chivas name and uniforms and would share
revenues with the team.

Vergara has also begun cracking down on unauthorized Chivas
merchandise sold in Mexico. Vendors not sanctioned by the team have
had their merchandise confiscated at the Estadio Jalisco, the famed
Guadalajara stadium it calls home.

He hopes to monitor the sales of Chivas merchandise and use of Chivas
uniforms by amateur and semipro teams in the United States, of which
there are thousands.

As to which city Chivas USA will call home, Vergara has visited
Chicago twice. The city and surrounding areas are home to more than 1
million residents of Mexican descent; roughly two-thirds of them have
roots in Guadalajara or the state of Jalisco, of which it is the capital,
according to Fire general manager Peter Wilt.

A source says Vergara sent a proposal to the Los Angeles Coliseum but
rejected a counteroffer in late March. Another source says there
haven't been discussions between Vergara and Home Depot Center for
several weeks, but in previous meetings most of the details about his
team sharing the facility have been discussed.

MLS has proposed Vergara share with the Fire its stadium to be built
in Bridgeview but he has expressed a preference for Soldier Field.
League officials will meet with Vergara either this week or next week
to confirm his plans for 2005.

This is not going to end up being a good situation for the MLS.

Chivas will be great for the mls wherever they
decide to go ...
it's always good to have a full stadium
and thats what Chivas is very well known for.
I bet investors are going to like that
and it will be in the best interest of the league...

Not if it's at the expense of another team. That's why it's best for MLS to have Chivas located in a city that does not have an MLS team. It needs to be what is best for the league and the development of football in the USA -- NOT what is best for Jorge Vergara. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

If he is interested in furthering football in the US then welcome aboard -- if he just wants to line his pockets and doesn't care about MLS or US football then I wish he would leave. Right now I get the impression he doesn't give a rip about MLS at all.

Just my opinion and so not worth much.

well is very common to have 2 or more teams in a single city
in Guadalajara we use to have 4 teams now we just have 3
and there's enough fans for all of them...
also other cities around the world like Madrid....

Vergara says that he thinks MLS willl become eventually
one of the most important leagues in the world and he
wants to be a part of it .

also I 've just heard from the mexican federation
that they are working on a plan for the near future
on have a joined premier league between USA & Mexico and will make the proposition to MLS in the near future for this Super League.

and the posibilities of MLS going into the Libertadores Cup as well...

so I think all this changes are for good
and will benefit concacaf into having world class
soccer for the zone...

cheers

I have to agree. Chicago can't support one team, how can they support two?

LA could work. The Galaxy are the only team that make a profit and there is a much larger hispanic population in that area that would support a second team.

anyway Next game is Chivas vs San Luis.

San Luis has to win by a 5 goal difference to avoid
relegation...
good one. unless theres a "miracle" they are of to second division.

it'd be better if we had a mexican soccer instead
this forum is kinda hidden for any mex fans
to see it.

it'd be more likely for them to see it if it was out there.
