Chelsea are close to agreeing a £4million deal to snatch Dutch ace Royston Drenthe from under the noses of Real Madrid.

Drenthe was the star of the recent European Under-21 Championships and the Blues have moved quickly to do a deal with Feyenoord, according to reports.

Lyon 'considering' Malouda bid

Lyon are weighing up a 'strong offer' from Chelsea for Florent Malouda, a spokesman for the French club has revealed.

The Blues have been linked with Malouda for some time and the midfielder announced on Tuesday that he was confident a deal would go through.

He claimed he had agreed terms with Chelsea after speaking with Jose Mourinho and said Lyon were ready to let him go.

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas responded by saying Chelsea 'may not have the desire or the means' to push trough a deal, but they are now considering an improved bid.

"Chelsea have come back with a strong offer and Jean-Michel Aulas could meet a Chelsea official in the next few hours," the spokesman said.

Malouda, who was voted Ligue 1 player of the year last season, is understood to have left Lyon's training camp in the French Alps.

Reports in the French press suggest Chelsea have lodged an offer of €18.5million (£12.5million).

Chelsea have made a £12 million offer for Tottenham fullback Pascal Chimbonda.

The Sun says Chelsea are turning to Chimbonda after being price out of a deal for Sevilla right-back Daniel Alves.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho was snubbed in a £10m offer for the French right-back last month but has tested the resolve of Tottenham chief Martin Jol with an increased bid.

Mourinho is desperate for a right-back even though Glen Johnson will return to Stamford Bridge after a season-long loan at Portsmouth.

The Blues boss has lost faith in his fellow Portuguese Paulo Ferreira as a first-choice right-back.

Chelsea have made a £7 million offer for Feyenoord wing-back Roysten Drenthe.

Reports in Holland suggest Chelsea are willing to loan him back to the Dutch club next season in a bid to seal the deal.

Drenthe, 20, who can play at left back and left midfield, was voted Player of the Tournament at the European Under-21 Championships.

His agent, Andrew Wasiman, said: "There are top clubs that want him."

Florent Malouda is expected to sign for Chelsea today after leaving Lyon's preseason training camp.

France's player of the year was driven away by a Lyon staff member from the Alpine ski resort of Tignes where Lyon are preparing for their bid to win a seventh consecutive Ligue 1 title.

Reports in the French press suggest Chelsea have lodged an 18.5million euros bid (£12.5million) for the 27-year-old, who was a member of France's World Cup final team last summer.

Last week, Malouda revealed he wanted to join Chelsea.
