Default Jimmy Floyd becomes a star in stripes

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink looked like the happiest man in the world at Malaysia's national stadium last night.

And it had nothing to do with the fact that Chelsea had become the first winners of the Asia Cup.

Jimmy's winners' medal and even his penalty shootout miss were clearly the last thing on his mind after the game.

For Jimmy was clearly a man on a mission as he prowled around the dressing room area while the rest of his Chelsea pals celebrated.

And I am happy to report that Jimmy emerged from the United dressing room with a smile as big as the Petronas Towers here in Kuala Lumpur - and at 1,483 feet they are the tallest buildings in the world!

For Jimmy was tightly clutching a black and white shirt signed by Alan Shearer.

Big Al didn't have the best of nights against Chelsea but he is still the king in the eyes of his fellow Premiership professionals.

NI'VE got to say that I've been impressed with the standard of reporting by the Asian press here in Kuala Lumpur.

They know their stuff and in particular their knowledge of the Premiership is remarkable - as it is with the normal fan in the street.

And the Asia media haven't been afraid to tell it as it is. Indeed, on Friday morning Kieron Dyer will have choked on his cornflakes after being described as "an injury prone under-achiever" by the local Sun newspaper.

But like the rest of us the Asia press guys sometimes get it wrong.

Like the journalist who described United's boy from Cookstown, Northern Ireland, Aaron Hughes, as a Nigerian international.

NTHERE'S nothing more valuable to a football journalist than his mobile phone. Especially when he is 7,000 miles away from his office back in Newcastle.

That's why my heart went out to the hack from the Daily Express whose mobile disappeared within 24 hours of him arriving in Kuala Lumpur.

But you can guess what happened next.

I was being entertained to dinner on Saturday night by the Northumbria University guys who work here in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok and after the red wine had flowed - perhaps too much - I left my mobile in the restaurant.

It hasn't turned up yet and if anybody has been trying to ring me since Saturday then they know why I haven't replied.

To tell the truth I felt a bit of a prat. But I felt a lot better when Mike (Biffa) Bolam of the nufc.com website suffered a similar fate last night.
