Montreal in the finals of the A-League championship
waiting for either Seatlle or Vancouver
IMPACT REACHES A-LEAGUE FINAL
MONTREAL, September 12, 2004 — The Montreal Impact reached the A-League championship final, Sunday in front of 8,539 spectators at Claude Robillard Sports Complex, following a 1-1 tie against the Syracuse Salty Dogs in the second leg of the Eastern Conference final. The draw was enough for Montreal to win the two-game home-and-away, aggregate-goal series by a margin of three goals to one. The Impact will therefore play in the A-League final for the second time in club history, the first time since 1994.
"I couldn’t be more proud of my players," said head coach Nick DeSantis. "It’s a great feeling to be part of the final. The players have been fighting all year for this, they’ve been on a mission from the very beginning and now they’ve made it to the show."
"In 1994 we kind of clawed our way into the playoffs, and nobody expected us to be there," remembered veteran Lloyd Barker, who helped Montreal win the league title 10 years ago, along with current captain Mauro Biello and former midfielder DeSantis. "This year, everyone was gunning for us from the very beginning, so it has been tougher, but we’re up to the challenge and we’ll be ready for the final."
The championship game will take place on Saturday, September 18. DeSantis’ men will face either the Seattle Sounders or the Vancouver Whitecaps. In the Western Conference, the Sounders, who took a one-goal lead in the first leg, were slated to face the Whitecaps in Vancouver starting at 10:00 pm, Sunday.
The A-League announced after the Montreal-Syracuse game, Sunday, that if the Sounders win the Western final, the league title match would be played at Montreal’s Claude Robillard Sports Complex. If the Whitecaps prevail, the championship game will be held at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
The Impact scored the opening goal in Sunday’s game at the 20th minute of play when Patrick Leduc converted a penalty kick on a slow, but well-placed lob in the upper left corner. The official awarded the penalty kick when Syracuse midfielder Frankie Sanfilippo fouled Eduardo Sebrango in the penalty area.
"I’d been thinking about it for a while, it’s the kind of thing that can surprise a goalkeeper," said Leduc about his strategy, the midfielder having previously scored three times on PKs this regular season. "My thinking was that other teams were starting to know me, so I wanted to do something different."
The Salty Dogs were dealt another blow when Scott Schweitzer was ejected at the 32nd minute for a dangerous tackle on Mauricio Vincello. Syracuse still managed to reply, however, with a goal at the 39th, when Kupono Low accepted a long cross from Jonathan Steele and beat goalkeeper Greg Sutton from up close.
That was the first goal allowed by Sutton in four starts so far in the playoffs. The Impact ‘keeper had to come up with big saves after that to prevent Syracuse from doing further damage, blocking headers from up close by Tim O’Neill at the 41st and 53rd minutes.
"They fought harder than us," said DeSantis. "We wanted to play and score, but we came out a little flat, they were winning the 50-50 balls. Fatigue started to catch up to us, but now we have one week to prepare."
Defenders Gabriel Gervais and Mauricio Vincello were pulled from the game due to injuries. Their condition will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

The sport is doing fine at the kids level more kids play soccer then
ice hockey and american baseball combined. Our major problem
is that there is no professional league for these kids to look to in the future. MLS is rumoured to be coming to Toronto, which will be great cause Toronto has been without pro soccer since the Toronto Blizzard closed up shop after the CSL died.

I live around the corner so I will take the trip to the Training Ground.
I will hopefully try to talk to CSA members over there that's if I don't Get whisked away by security. Steven Hart is not the answer, I hate his style, We need a Free Flowing Game much like the Euro.

Canada beats Bermuda 3-0...
Quote:
Canada routs Bermuda 3-0 in soccer friendly
HAMILTON, Bermuda – Toronto's Atiba Hutchinson scored in the 21st minute to spark a three-goal first half, and Canada routed Bermuda 3-0 in an exhibition game Sunday in preparation for the CONCACAF Gold Cup later this year.
Tomasz Radzinski of Toronto scored in the 29th minute and Paul Stalteri, also of Toronto, added another in the 44th minute.
"We kept the ball a lot and we scored goals in the first half, but we should have scored more in the first half," interim coach Stephen Hart said.
"And we should have scored in the second half. So from that respect I'm not really pleased, we could have been much more ruthless in front of goal."
"In all honesty, we could have come off the field 6-0. We missed breakaways, we need more killer instinct. "
Canada is expected to name their official coach next week, and Hart is one of four candidates vying for the job.
"It's not a situation that I'm in control of," said Hart. "I'm just waiting for the decision like the other candidates."
Canada is grouped with Costa Rica, Haiti and Guadeloupe in the first round of the Gold Cup.
