Furious Napoli striker Emanuele Calaio believes that he has been fined for missing a penalty against Reggina in Week 11.

The 25-year-old hitman was a key player in the Partenopei’s climb back from Serie C, but he has failed to find the net this term in the top flight.

Calaio was keen to make his mark from the spot, but his misery at seeing his effort tipped wide was compounded when he was hit with a £2,000 fine.

The fine is officially for “breaking internal regulations” after a minor indiscretion during training, but the Palermo native claims it is an excuse to punish him.

“If I had scored, would they have fined me like that?” he inveighed bitterly.

I can't see the club taking this reaction too well, he needs to be careful.

Ah I fucking loved that!! He signed him then before he even plays a game he gets tested for drugs and fails!! He got a lengthy suspension and never actually played for the club I believe.

Parma sporting director Gabriele Zamagna has refuted suggestions that the Ducali are preparing a bid for Napoli’s Emanuele Calaiò.

Calaiò was prolific in the Vesuviani’s rise from Serie C with 18 goals in the third tier and 14 in the Cadetti last term.

However, Serie A has been a different matter as the Palermo native is yet to score and 11 of his 12 outings were as a substitute.

“Are we thinking of Calaiò? Absolutely not,” Zamagna told Napoli Magazine.

“At the moment we aren’t thinking about the market. We are focused on our League campaign and we think that we have created a good enough squad.

“We are patiently awaiting the return of Igor Budan in attack as he is still out with a nasty muscular injury.

“I think Budan will be our big January addition and we aren’t thinking of making any big purchases or sales.”

I don;t think Calaio is getting much playing time this season. I haven't been able to catch a lot of Napoli games but I haven't seen him play yet. Maybe a move is neeed for him... a Corradi- Calaio partnership...

Unsettled Napoli striker Emanuele Calaiò is set to quit the Stadio San Paolo in January, but sporting director Pierpaolo Marino sees a role for him.

The Sicilian hitman was an important figure as the Vesuviani rose from Serie C to the top flight, but his status has faded in Serie A.

Calaiò has started just once all term and is yet to find the net during this campaign.

Having been dropped from the squad for last weekend’s Siena clash, it seems that his marriage with Partenopei may be over, despite assurances from the club.

“I chose to play Mariano Bogliacino against Siena because he gives me a better balance against a side with four midfielders,” Coach Edy Reja insisted.

“There are no problems. I have a squad to choose from and you have to make decisions for the good of the unit.”

“He is an important player for us who can play an important role in our season if he gives his all for the shirt,” Marino agreed.

“We have to try and balance Calaiò’s current interests and the club’s. As soon as he says he wants to leave, we have to look for a top class replacement in the market.

“At the moment we need to focus on the wider picture of Napoli. This project is still young after three and a half years, but we are already in sixth or seventh place.”

Calaiò could face a return to the Cadetti with Brescia and Bologna reportedly interested, but he will surely look for a Serie A suitor in the New Year.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has expressed his delight that Emanuele Calaiò has rediscovered his shooting boots.

Calaiò was a key figure for the Vesuviani in Serie B and C when he found the net 32 times in two seasons.

However, the Palermo native has struggled to command a starting place this term before he blasted a match-winning brace against Livorno yesterday.

“I’m happy because he called me and begged me to send him out on loan to Genoa in January,” De Laurentiis revealed.

“However, I made a high demand to Genoa’s Enrico Preziosi, who is a good friend, and he saw that I wanted to keep him.

“It’s important to have lots of players at the highest level because sooner or later they can all prove decisive.”

Partenopei sporting director Pierpaolo Marino was also full of praise for Calaiò, who only started because of Marcelo Zalayeta’s suspension.

“I want to publicly thank Roberto Sosa and Calaiò who played a part in the club’s history by helping us from Serie C to the top flight,” he declared.

“As a club we want to keep hold of Calaiò and didn’t want him to leave in January as we have faith in him. Sosa-Calaiò isn’t a Third Division partnership and they showed that.”
