Default Siena set for name change?

The Tuscan side have signed a new three-year deal with their bank shirt sponsors – Banca Monte dei Paschi – but part of the deal means they will have to at least explore the possibility of a name change.

As a result, Siena will now reportedly contact the Italian Football League and the Italian Football Federation to see if they could be referred to as ‘Montepaschi Siena’ from next season.

The act of sponsors making up team names is a common occurrence on the Italian volleyball and basketball scene.

The Stadio Artemio Franchi side would become the first football club in the Italian game to take such a step if they are given the green light by the authorities.

Stupid move...i will still refer to them as Siena if they get changed. I don't mind a stadium belling called after a sponsor, but not the club name.

Yeah, same here. Plus it will surely force a badge change too, since I'm sure they'll want the sponsor on the badge.

I'm not against sponsor-named stadiums, sponsors on shirts, etc. etc., but there's something about naming the CLUB after the sponsor that crosses the line for me.

It doesn't really matter much if the sponsor is incorporated in the name I think. If they're called ‘Montepaschi Siena’ then people will still call them Siena, this is the way football is going anyway.

What dumb idea...Isnt 11 walking billboards enough advertisment, now they have to name their team after them??

Its bad enough that you think a teams name is mazda because thats the biggest word on their shirt...now their name really will be mazda haha

I think my first ever post on TS was bashing Milan for the "Bet and win" sponsor. Kahn negative repped for that...but he's made up for it though. I just need Kahn to match fix a few games for me in FM to fullly make it up to me.

I actually love the bwin sponsor, but I'm biased since I like gambling stuff. It IS pretty funny though, considering some of Milan's reputation.

If we still had the Mediolanum Bank sponsor, we could be A.C. Mediolanum, which wouldn't be too bad as Mediolanum is the old Latin name of Milan anyway.

But it wouldn't hold a candle to Bet and Win Milan.

These companies bombard us with ads every minute of every game. That's why i don't mind naming the field after a company. They will find another way of getting there ad across. At hockey games, they have ads running on the scoreboard of tv commercials for their products every whistle. ridiculous. But when you have 20,00-80,000 people in attendance, best way to advertise and the tv coverage as well.

If it means the financial stability of an organization, then I have no problems with it.

Wake up people, pro sports is money, and I understand why they would consider such an idea, regardless of how stupid it is.
