Lazio CL 2008
Quote:
Lazio’s Brazilian defender Emilson Cribari is hoping to be grouped with Spanish giants Barcelona in this afternoon’s Champions League draw.
The capital club had to dig deep to battle back from a goal down for a 3-1 win away to Dinamo Bucharest in the third preliminary round.
Cribari suffered a horrific facial injury in the first leg after a collision in which his eye socket moved, but made a miraculous recovery to play in Romania.
“My dream is to take on Barcelona at the Nou Camp,” he revealed. “I’m no hero for what I did in Bucharest – sometimes you need to take a risk to give your teammates a hand and I did that.”
The ex-Empoli man impressed last season in Lazio’s revelatory season and admits that he is harbouring hopes of making an international debut this year.
“In the future I hope to wear the Selecao shirt,” he concluded. “I’m hoping that the Champions League will prove a springboard.”
Lazio are in Pot Three for the draw in Monaco which means they will have to negotiate two giants if they are to progress to the knock-out stages.

Very tough group, but honestly, for Lazio, just hosting games against such large teams in the CL is a win-win situation.
However Werder is the favourite for the second spot. They must beat them. The game against Real Madrid is secondary.

Getting out of that group will be an achievement in itself.
This will be a good experience for the players.

This is a step up for Lazio. They'll host teams like Real Madrid in Rome and its not unrealistic that they can take the second plot.
Yes, Madrid and Bremen are favorites for the group, but if Lazio can take six points against Olympiakos....fight as dogs against Bremen and maybe capture a point against Madrid....they'll continue in the CL. 3rd place also gives a place in the UEFA cup.

Nastase accused of Lazio deal
Friday 7 September, 2007
Dinamo Bucharest defender Valentin Nastase is considering fleeing Romania after allegations that he was paid to concede a penalty in the Champions League tie against Lazio.
The ex-Ascoli stopper has been made the scapegoat after the Romanian champions’ defeat and has cancelled his contract with the club.
Nastase gave away a vital penalty in the second leg which allowed the Biancocelesti to level the tie after Florin Bratu’s strike in the first period.
However, things have gone from bad to worse for the punch-drunk 32-year-old as a newspaper in his native country has accused him of conceding the spot kick on purpose in exchange for money.
“How much did it cost?” is the headline of Fanatik Magazine alongside a picture of Nastase’s ill-fated lunge, and within there is an article in which it is suggested that he received a payment of £300,000.
There is currently absolutely no proof of any wrong-doing from Nastase, but he looks set to quit the country as public indignation continues to linger.
Meanwhile, Lazio have been fined around £5,000 for the misconduct of their fans during the two-legged tie.
