Arrow 2008 Coppa Italia - Fourth Round

Quote:
Coppa Italia Wrap: Napoli, Genoa And Bari Ease Through
It may not be the most prestigious of domestic cups, but there's plenty of pride at stake in the TIM Cup. Most of tonight's matches ended predictably enough, but there were a few giant-killing episodes in Round 1...

zoom - galleria

Bari stepped into Round 2 of the TIM Cup thanks to a late goal against Albinoleffe.

Donda did the honours in the 76th minute to see the southern side through.

Triestina won their all-Serie B clash with Mantova 1-0 after a dramatic finish at the Stadio Nereo Rocco.

After Allegretti's late goal, Kyriazis saw straight red after conceding a penalty, which Lucenti duly missed to keep the victory in Trieste.

Rimini thrashed Frosinone in another second tier meeting, Jeda scoring two in the 6-0 mauling of the Canaries at the Romeo Neri.

Pisa came from 1-0 down to snatch a last-gasp victory over Brescia, the Lombard club falling victim to Castillo's final minute winner.

Napoli crushed ten-man Cesena thanks to two goals in either half. Sacilotto got his marching orders in the 53rd minute to compound the visitors' woes before De Zebri and Domizzi wrapped up the victory.

Avellino became the only side to lose at home as Guberti's first half double gave Ascoli the win at the Campania side.

Genoa had Bega sent off in the last minute, but that wasn't enough to dampen Genovese spirits as two early goals saw them defeat Grosetto 2-1.

The Tuscan side qualified for the Coppa by virtue of their first ever promotion to Serie B and ran their illustrious hosts fairly close, Carparelli's 32nd minute goal giving the Rossoblu something of a fright.

Finally, Chievo stumbled to defeat at Ravenna, themselves newly promoted to the second tier, losing out 1-0 to Fofana's 87th minute winner.

The home side's victory was all the more impressive for their being down to ten men following Succi's 61st minute red card.

Treviso needed a penalty shoot-out to overcome a dogged Lecce side after a 2-2 draw in the Veneto.

The home side took an early lead, the southerners equalising midway through the second half and then taking the lead one minute into injury time.

But Smit's goal five minutes from the end took the match to a shoot-out, where his team duly prevailed.

The previous day saw Piacenza convincingly beat Spezia 2-0 at home, Bologna overcome visiting Modena 2-1, and Vicenza manage a penalty shooutout win at Messina following a 2-2 stalemate.

The visitors were 2-0 down with 13 minutes to go before Raimondi and Scardina struck to take the match to extra time.

Roma won the competition last year (pictured) after overcoming Inter over two legs in the final. The capital side won the first leg 6-2 before a 2-1 defeat in Milan.

In Rome? I guess if Roma make the final, they have an advantage. I do like the scrapping of two legged affair. I hated that.

Don't forget Lazio too, this might be their only shot at a trophy... they might perform well in the Coppa unlike in the league. but I agree a one legged match is much better!

Coppa: Matri sinks Samp Wednesday 12 December, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Supersub Alessandro Matri gave Cagliari a surprise win over Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia fourth round.

It was the first victory since Coach Nedo Sonetti took over the Sardinian outfit.

Both sides gave space to those who don’t usually get a run-out in Serie A, but replacement Blucerchiati goalkeeper Antonio Mirante impressed with early saves on Marco Mancosu and Joaquin Larrivey’s splendid header.

Young Slovenian shot-stopper Jan Koprivec also endeared himself to the home crowd by keeping out Angelo Palombo’s strike and an Andrea Caracciolo volley.

Cagliari had the best scoring opportunities overall and wasted them, in particular when Larrivey fired straight at the ‘keeper and Michele Fini failed to hit the back of the net with the follow-up.

It was a substitute who made the difference on 74 minutes, as Matri volleyed in Larrivey’s assist with his right foot to beat Mirante.

The second leg will be around January 16, 2008.

Seething Mazzarri savages Samp Thursday 13 December, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sampdoria Coach Walter Mazzarri was livid after the Blucerchiati were undone by Cagliari in last night’s Coppa Italia clash.

The Genoa outfit were unexpectedly beaten by the lowly Sardinians after a second-half goal from substitute Alessandro Matri.

While Mazzarri’s side have a second leg in January to reverse the situation, the former Reggina boss couldn’t hide his rage.

“It’s a defeat that should have been avoided,” he roared. “In the first half we controlled the game well, but in the second period we crumbled physically, especially in defence.

“I was expecting something more from my team and I didn’t get the positive response that I wanted.

“There were too many players looking out of shape who hadn’t reached match fitness.”

The result was far from encouraging ahead of the weekend’s daunting home tie against Scudetto chasing Roma.
