Default 5 players charged with match fixing

Five Italian players have been charged over alleged match-fixing of last season's Serie A fixtures between Atalanta and relegated Livorno.

The charge relates to last season's home and away fixtures.

Atalanta's Gian Paolo Bellini and Livorno's former captain David Balleri have been charged with match-fixing.

Livorno brothers Emanuele and Antonio Filippini and team-mate Alessandro Grandoni, have been charged for failing to inform authorities about the events.

The two sides drew 1-1 on 23 December with the 4 May fixture ending with Atlanta winning 3-2.

Both clubs were also reported to the national disciplinary commission over the behaviour of their players.

Italian football is no stranger to allegations of match-fixing.

In 2006 Lazio, Fiorentina and AC Milan were all deducted points for their part in a match-fixing scandal, while Juventus were relegated.

Five players have been charged over alleged match-fixing in last season’s home and away Serie A fixtures between Atalanta and relegated Livorno, Italy’s football federation (FIGC) said on Friday.

Atalanta’s Gian Paolo Bellini and former Livorno captain David Balleri have been charged with seeking to fix the results of the games on Dec 23, which ended in a 1-1 draw, and May 4, which Atalanta won 3-2, the FIGC said.

Livorno brothers Emanuele and Antonio Filippini, along with team mate Alessandro Grandoni, have also been reported by the federation’s prosecutor to the national disciplinary commission for a failure to inform the authorities about the events.

The two clubs were also reported to the commission over the behaviour of their players.

“I don’t think there was any type of agreement at all,” Luigi Del Neri, the coach of Bergamo-based Atalanta, was quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport’s website (www.gazzetta.it). “Atalanta played to win, as always.”

Italian soccer has only just got over the 2006 match-fixing scandal, which led to Juventus being relegated to Serie B and AC Milan, Lazio, Fiorentina and Reggina being deducted league points.

Juventus, whose former general manager Luciano Moggi was accused of being at the centre of attempts to secure compliant referees for some teams’ games, won promotion back to Serie A at the first attempt and finished third last season to win a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Even with all the controversies that Italian football has gone through recently, it still manages to be a top league. One thing that I never understood is why people are still in the whole bribery shindig. it's really not worth it in the long run.

Yes, we do have our fair share of scandals, and it is truely unfortunate. But to think that the UK or the US, supposedly the greatest democracies on the planet don't have scandal or corruption is a bit of a stretch.

At least large corporations and special interests don't control our government or force us to do things against other countries in the interest of money.

To me that scandal is far greater and far worse than this, if we look at the big picture.
