Question Do you think some Roma fans love Totti a little too much?

I understand the signifance of Totti at AS Roma, however it almost seems like the "love" affair that those fans have for him, is almost unnatural.

And do you think other stars have this admiration?

For me, it is not the same. Del Piero is not loved like Totti is. J.Zanetti is not loved like Totti is. Maldini...the Great Maldini is not loved or forgiven like Totti is.

Why is this? Personality of Romans? Personality of Roma fans?

Discuss...

What exactly do you mean by forgiven?I also think its the same admiration Milan fans have with Maldini.Born and bred in their youth system and city.

The difference is that 1 is a world class player playing for a world class team while the other opted to leave all the fame and fortune of the other big clubs and fight it out with a mid table team like Roma and turn them back into the success.

I think thats why we love him so much. The fact that he denied the likes of Chelsea Real Madrid Ac Milan Inter Juve all for the simple fact of staying here and winning in Rome is whats truly breath taking. You dont see that now a days. You see players playing for money and money alone.Leaving one club to join a direct rival just because they offer a few more thousands of dollars.

1 Scudetto with Roma is like 10 with another team. Those words are pretty much burnt and etched in the minds of Roma fans. What else is there to do then watch a living legend at work and admire his interpretation of football. Its art work what he does out there.Im not trying to sugar coat things but just look at how he plays. In a alien position and still scoring goals. In a Center forward role but still behind his half at times.Flicks, touches, first time balls. If he was in Milan with Kaka do you know how those two would have rocked the team if not the world ( hypothetically ).If he was in Barca Ronaldinho and Totti together argueablly two of the best passers in the world.two of the most brilliant visionaries? And yet he decides to stay in Rome.

Sure he is praised but what exactly do you expect. We watched him go from a promising young player to a world class player to a legend before our eyes. He's already 31....to think its going to be over soon.Still mind boggling that the best Roma player is playing now in my generation.

These are the main factors.I dont expect massive club supporters to understand that a world class player opted to stay in his home town to bring the prestige up.Now we're watching De Rossi and Aquilani grow.It really is great times.Beautiful football we're playing.Fantastic really. The focal point is Totti.Without him where would we be?

Gerrard with Liverpool is another I can think of.Del Piero is loved by most italians non more so then Juve fans (obviously).

I really dont understand the beef with this If there is any.

There is no beef. As a forum, we were accused of not having enough discussion. So I want more discussion.

My comment was that Totti seems to get away with little criticism from Roman fans and the media.

I don't see the correlation with Maldini, since Maldini has fallen to criticism from Milanista for not retiring. I've heard or read this on many forums. Totti if he spits or has a bad game or loses concentration in a match, never gets any flack. Its "Totti", he can do anything.

That is my comment or my observation. Thank you for giving me input.

Let me add, that I have given criticism to Il Capitano Zanetti for not being vocal enough in years past and I still find that being a weak part of his game. Though he has really shown me what type of player he is. Still going strong, and top CM in Italy.

Im usually the first to point out when Totti has a bad game or doesnt.

Quote:
Totti if he spits

He spat once.Surely he's forgiven by now. He's completely changed since marriage and his first son being born.

Ofcourse everything I said was my personal opinion on Totti.Weather or not others feel differently is totally up to them.Maldini is getting that slack at the age of 39.Im sure Totti would as well if he played for that long .

Sometimes it better to forgive and forget then to hold some kinda anger or resentment towards a player.Let him play freely is my personal creed.

When De Rossi got that Red card agains the States in the World cup I was moaning and bitching but he's forgiven now ( I should hope ) and is playing with great consistancy now.One could even say that if De Rossi plays badly then Roma does...which shows how important he is to the club....but now Im going off topic.

As far as I'm concerned Totti is Roma's greatest ever player, that's why he's loved so much.

Roma are not as big as Juventus or Milan yet they've had a player that would walk into any team in the world play for them for nearly 15 years. He's made the most appearances for the club (I believe) and he's scored the most goals, but above all else he's Roman.

In my opinion Totti is as good as anyone in the world on his day. Maybe he wouldn't have done as well had he moved clubs, I often think that playing for Roma gets an extra 15-20% out of him (in an similar way to Gerrard at Liverpool).

I can't say I particularly like Totti but what he does with a ball at his feet you can't deny. In terms of talent I'd probably rank him ahead of Del Piero and I'd even go as far to say as he's the most talented Italian player we've had since Baggio (along with Cassano).

That's good enough for me.

However I like to go over Roma's roster.

Totti is 39 goals away from hitting the 200 goal mark. Del Piero is around the same number as Totti. And Del Piero is a few years his elder. Totti bring heart and determination in every match he plays. He was hot tempered, but that's bc he loves the game and loves the shirt he's wearing.

As Sinoy said...there's a mutual respect for Totti between himself and the fans. Totti has never betrayed his home town and they show admiration for that. Totti has paved the way for other Rome greats as well. De Rossi and Aquilani will both follow in the footsteps of Totti and become legends as well. They do not possess the same amount of natural talent as Il Capitano, but both are tremendous talents.

And the personal accomplishments Totti received in 2006 was incredible. Top scorer in Serie A, won the Goldon Shoe, won Coppa Italia, won the World Cup, went to the final 16 of CL, Finished 2nd place in the league. Compare that resume to Kaka...bc Ricky had 10 goals in CL, but 8 in Serie A. Ricky played 30 games in Serie A, where Totti played 35. Milan were horrendous in Serie A last season, whereas Roma played the most attractive soccer in all of Europe. And ultimately, Totti was #10 on the list for footballer of the year...and why is that...bc he plays on Roma and not Milan. Put the red/black colours on him and he would be footballer of the year. He's the footballer of the year in all us Roma fans eyes.

All of Italy should forgive him for the spit, the red card in 02', all for the Australia penalty. Also, bc Totti had 3-4 assists in the WC 06 as well. Which not many people recall.

These clips illustrate the phenomenal performance that went unnoticed by many at the WC.

And what would a Calcio section be without a CH4 article lol...

Count em up boys...+10 this season. 161!! Totti has 2 years left on his contract and will sign an extension soon as well. He will surpass 200!!! Living legend!!!

It helps that Roma have made him the highest paid Italian player. As much as I idolize Del Piero, it would be extremely naive of me to assume he would be still be with Juve if he wasn't Juve's top earner all those years (not anymore though).

Pretty sure Kaka is the highest paid player now. Totti is second. Not 100% sure though.
