Inter transfer guru Marco Branca has announced the club is working out the final details for Palermo full-back Fabio Grosso.

“We haven’t sealed the deal yet, but we are very close,” confirmed the Nerazzurri technical director this evening.


“We spoke to Grosso today and discussed the matter. I think we’ll get together again in two or three days to put the final details in place.”


Grosso has been at Palermo for three seasons and his form for the side saw him become an Azzurri regular, so far picking up 15 caps for his country and travelling to Germany for the World Cup.


The 29-year-old is also valuable for his set-piece abilities and would suit Coach Roberto Mancini’s 4-4-2 system.


Branca was also asked to comment on Luca Toni, who has been linked with Inter after hinting his future at Fiorentina was far from secure.


“I have my problems to deal with, I can’t keep an eye on those of other clubs too. I think that any player in the world would like to wear the Inter jersey. This is a great side with an impressive history,” he noted.


Meanwhile, Palermo have secured the services of 39-year-old Chievo goalkeeper Alberto ‘Jimmy’ Fontana, who was out of contract.

Grosso is generally useful without being outstanding, but defense is the area where the absence of young Italians at the "big clubs" really stands out (Grosso can also play as a defensive midfielder).

Inter ‘agree’ Grosso deal Monday 5 June, 2006

Palermo’s Fabio Grosso looks almost certain to be playing for Inter next season after the two clubs met this morning.

Although neither outfit have made an official statement, it is widely believed that an agreement has been reached.

Inter owner Massimo Moratti (pictured) encountered Rosanero President Maurizio Zamparini where he agreed to pay around £4m and hand over youngster Hernan Pablo Dellafiore, who spent last season on loan at Treviso, as part of the deal.

The Nerazzurri were in need of a left-back after Giuseppe Favalli joined Milan and Werder Bremen netted Pierre Wome.

Grosso is widely considered as one of the best attacking defenders in Italy and is a part of Marcello Lippi’s World Cup squad.

The 29-year-old has been at the Stadio Barbera since he left Perugia for Sicily in January 2004.

I don't understand why you bought Maxwell if you were going to buy Grosso, both of them are class and it's difficult to tell who the better one is. Maxwell was voted as player of the year in the Dutch league before he got injured. Now we'll have to wait and see how he'll cope with the long absence from the pitch.

But your defence looks great now, all you have to do is replace Veron and Martins and I can see you competing for the title.

Italy’s World Cup hero Fabio Grosso is officially an Inter player after he completed his move from Palermo today.

The two clubs initially agreed a £4m transfer fee before the World Cup Finals and the defender was in Milan on Thursday to finalise his switch.

The left-back, who slotted home the winning penalty in the Germany 2006 Final against France, has penned a contract until June 2010.

Grosso spent the morning at the Saras offices of Inter owner Massimo Moratti who has publicly praised the stopper in recent weeks.

Grosso then transferred himself to the outfit’s headquarters where he held a meeting with technical director Marco Branca and sporting director Gabriele Oriali.

The new boy also spent a brief period with boss Roberto Mancini as they discussed plans for next term.

Grosso will be officially unveiled to the media once he and his pregnant wife have spent a few weeks on holiday in Sardinia.
