Rijkaard Turns Abusive As Giovani Is Injured

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has been accused of abusing the player whose horror tackle left Giovani Dos Santos being stretchered off.


Alcoyano defender Manuel Carrion's horror tackle on Giovani dos Santos left the Mexican in a heap, and unable to get up.

He had to be stretchered off in obvious pain, and will undergo scans today to determine the extent of the damage to his ankle.

"It is very bad and painful at the moment, but I hope it turns out to be nothing too serious," he said after the game.

The focus, however, was on Carrion and Frank Rijkaard.

The defender was sent off later in the game after another poor challenge on Bojan Krkic, and Rijkaard made his frustration show, having more than a few words with him as he left the pitch.

Said the Dutchman after the game: "He [Carrion] was surprised he was sent off, but it was good for us because he almost killed two players."

Carrion, however, accused the Dutchman of abusing him: "He called me a son of a b****."

While there is general unanimity in that Carrion's tackles should earn him a significant ban, that Rijkaard lost his cool is being seen as a testament to his increasingly agitated state of mind.

Dos Santos Back In Action Next Week

FC Barcelona's fear over Giovani Dos Santos' injury have been allayed after the club reported that the youngster should be back in training next week.


The Mexican whizzkid limped out of the Blaugrana's Copa del Rey encounter with Alcoyano on Tuesday evening and it was feared he could be out for several weeks.

However, tests on Wednesday morning have revealed that he has only suffered a slight sprain in his left ankle and the bone has not been affected.

Doctors have stated that he should be able to resume normal training next week as the damage to the external lateral ligament should have healed by then.

Dos Santos suffered the blow in the 69th minute of the midweek encounter after a particularly hefty tackle from Manuel Carrión.

The Alcoyano defender was later sent off and incurred the wrath of Barça coach Frank Rijkaard as the Dutchman confronted him to let the player know what he thought of him.

Due to the break in the league for internationals, Dos Santos should be fit in time for FC Barcelona's next game at home to Recreativo in ten days time.

Rijkaard Wants To Continue At Barça

Frank Rijkaard insists that if he isn't axed at the end of the season he will continue at the Spanish club for another year.

The Dutchman told Catalunya Radio that he would remain at Barcelona for another year if the club directors still wanted him, and he also commented about a gesture he made to Ronaldinho in a recent training session, declaring that he didn’t do it as a publicity stunt.

He also revealed Barcelona’s future objectives, which he has openly discussed with Marc Ingla, who has become the club’s new vice-president.

“We have get-together's, and he is often in the dressing room," said Rijkaard. "He wants to know what we are doing, our objectives, and what we do in the training sessions, etc."

When asked which teams he would prefer to avoid when the Champions League round of sixteen draw is made on the 21st of December, Rijkaard was very clear.

“I would like to avoid the British teams,” stated Rijkaard.

In reference to Ronaldinho, who has been heavily criticized in recent weeks, Rijkaard was very optimistic that the Brazilian would return to his true sensational form.

“We have to congratulate him for the work he has done, but it isn’t the right moment to stop," he opined.

"His mentality has been very good. I have seen him very well when with his teammates. Step by step he is improving. He is a fundamental player for us.

"I am very happy with him. It hasn’t been easy for him. His mentality, his work for the team, and the happiness he gives to the dressing room are fundamental.

“He is a great person. It is another thing to have to perform to your maximum level on the field. You need help and support, but we can’t get dramatic about it.”

Laporta: Rijkaard Is Here For As Long As He Wants

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has told As that coach Frank Rijkaard effectively has a secure job at Camp Nou...

Barcelona president Joan Laporta denied rumours that he and the club directors are plotting to remove coach Frank Rijkaard should the year end badly on the pitch.

"Rijkaard has a contract and will be at Barcelona until he wants to go," the president told As.

"He is our coach and he has our full confidence.

"Here, if we're to enjoy the best moments then we need to show support during the bad times.

"That's how we've done things since he joined, and that's what we'll continue to do."

Laporta went on to add that he didn't think it necessary at the time being to discuss a renovation of Ronaldinho's deal.

The Brazilian star is under contract until 2010, and although new FIFA rules could potentially see the player leave before then for a bargain price without a new deal, Laporta will not act hastily.

"This player's contract is not under discussion at this time of the season or in this situation, as it ends in 2010," he pointed out.

"We'll act with market logic and justice."

Real Madrid sporting director Pedja Mijatovic has spoken out against Barcelona's recent form - plus that of Ronaldinho - with Laporta putting it down to pre-Clasico mind-games.

"It's something that's a part of this game", he said of the December 23rd clash with Madrid at Camp Nou.

"But our responsibility as managers is not to rise to these issues, and instead we need to work to put on a great show, and give joy to our socios and fans."
