Default Nou Camp Nou

Barcelona president Joan Laporta believes that only a renovated Camp Nou can continue to set the standards for football stadiums worldwide for the next hundred years.

The renovation of the Camp Nou will see the capacity of the 98,000-seater increase further, along with a series of improvements that will make it the most modern stadium in the World.

The cost will also be phenomenal - equivalent to that of building a new stadium. Some have questioned whether it is something necessary at this point, when it is anyway one of, if not the, finest stadiums in the World.

Joan Laporta insists it is time to build a Camp Nou that will set the standards for the rest of the century.

"The truth is that it was a great achievement to built the stadium for FC Barcelona that today stands as a monument, a cathedral of football," he told the club's official website.

"But you have to be realistic. Nearly 50 years have passed and now is the time for everyone connected with Barça to have courage, and to confront the renovation and the modernisation of Camp Nou with enough ambition to make it great for many years to come.

"It is not enough that it is built for another 50 years, more like 100 years. It all depends on us and our courage."

Building extra capacity isn't necessary, the only thing needed is to update a stadium that is 50 years old to make it safer.

We're still in debt by 40m euros down from almost 200m euros 4 seasons ago. If we pay fir this new stadium and have another season like 02/03 then we're stuffed.

Camp Nou is Catalan, Nou Camp was the older Spanish version, although the official name now in all languages is Camp Nou (there was actually a vote on this).

I am used to hearing Noo rather than Now, but wouldn't swear as to my Catalan pronunciation.

The Foster project looks quite cool, and 10,000 more seats are 10,000 more seats. Whether it will do anything to improve the atmosphere is a more difficult question.

Yeah, I have thought to myself, can't this wait a few years, perhaps?

is Laporta seeking a bit of Glory from this?

FCBarcelona.cat

Here's a slideshow showing the looks and dimensions of the updated stadium. Looks like a big colourful toilet seat.
