Barca are through to the final of the World Club Championship after crushing Mexican side America with a dazzling and ruthless display of first-touch football, accuracy and technical superiority.

Just how well the players would react to the jet lag after the long flight to Japan was the main doubt hovering over the preparations for the match. The opening minutes of the game made it plain this wasn't going to be a factor, with the team transmitting a sense of superiority and absolute control right from the kick-off. First half goals from Gudjohnsen (minute 11) and Márquez (minute 30) put Barca well on the road to victory and allowed the team to play a patient, creative game. Two more goals in the second half from Ronaldinho and Deco put the seal on a comfortable performance from the reigning European champions.

Barca started in spectacular style and kept total control of possession, with the game being played out mostly in the opposing half. Deco and Iniesta took control in midfield and the team in general showed great mobility and penetration down the wings. The opportunities soon started to flow, with shots from Ronaldinho, Márquez and Deco.

First-touch football

Barca's evident superiority was soon rewarded with a goal that came as the culmination of a superb combination of first-touch passing between Deco, Ronaldinho, Iniesta and Gudjohnsen. The speed and precision of the build-up was tidily finished off by Gudjohnsen and brought the crowd (mainly supporting Barca) to their feet.

Barca continued to pile on the pressure and limited America to the occasional counterattack and dead ball move. The Mexican side's best effort came as a result of a fierce Cabañas free kick in the 22nd minute, which Valdés saved at the post.

Márquez makes it 2-0

Barca's second gaol came from a Deco corner. Barca's Mexican international Rafa Marquez found the back of his marker to head home from inside the goal area, thus scoring his first gaol of the season against his fellow countrymen.

With the match very much under control, Barca came out in the second half to play a patient, holding game. Xavi replaced Motta in the 61st minute and contributed to even greater control, leaving the Mexicans with few opportunities. Barca continued to look for a third goal and provided some excellent entertainment for the Japanese fans.

Unstoppable

With Ronaldinho and Deco leading the display of creative football, the Barca players were making the best possible advert of the Club - a continuous advertisement of spectacular, attacking football. After yet another superb combination, Ronaldinho seized on a rebound off the keeper to make it 3-0 (minute 61).

Deco gets his goal

The excellent football - and the chances - continued to flow during the closing minutes of the match and a fourth goal was almost inevitable. Once again, Ronaldinho pulled three defenders towards him and set up a shot for Deco from outside the area. The ball fizzed into the net just inside the post to put a fitting end to a superb display of attacking football that will have delighted fans everywhere.

Four years on, the Brazilian ace finds himself once again in a position of lifting a world title in the Yokohama stadium, the same scene which saw him win the world cup in Korea and Japan in 2002. Ronaldihno said "This is the perfect moment to enter into the history books".

In the main entrance to the Yokohama stadium, there is a commemorative monument of the final between Brazil and Germany in 2002. on it, are the names of the five times champions Brazil; among them the names of Ronaldinho, Belletti and Edmilson. 'Ronnie', who would be awarded the accolade of best player in the world four years later, wants the triple crown for Barça and make 2006 a historical year. Ronaldinho speaks about his feelings before Sunday's final to www.fcbarcelona.cat and Barça TV.

You're going to play in a world final, this time for clubs, in Yokohama. What are your memories?

"I have very fond memories. I won the world cup here and everytime I go into the stadium, thoughts of that win come back to me. It's going to be great if I can walk out of here with another title".

What does the World cup of Japan and Korea mean to you?

"Achieving my biggest dream, I always used dream of moments like these. We won and we won well, I have good memories of this".

On a club level, is this tournament one of the most important titles for you.

"Having won the League and the Champions League, this is the only one left. We now have the possibility of entering into the history books. We also go into the game not as favorites, therefore we don't have to play under pressure".

The world Club Championships hold much prestige in South America, maybe more so than in Europe.

"It's as if is were the Champions League for us. But it doesn't mean it's going to be less complicated. They have a very strong team, therefore it's going to be very difficult to win the game. However, if we use our heads and go out and enjoy ourselves, it could go well for us".

What do you know about Internacional de Porto Alegre?

"I know everything; the players are from my city. I have friends who are supporters of the club and who tell me things about them. The team is very physically strong, they have quick players; we have to be focused if we are to beat them".

In Japan, do you feel at home? They adore you here.

"A little, I feel a little at home here. Whenever I come here, they've always treated me well. But Camp Nou is Camp Nou, my home is there. But it's true, I like it here".

Ronaldinho adored in Japan

He is the image of Barça in the world and Japan adores the blaugran number '10'. A few weeks ago, Ronaldinho released his own line of sports clothing (R10) and it is in this asian country where it has sold the most. Yet another sign of how much they adore the Brazilian ace.

Deco and Ronaldinho

For the first game of 2007 Getafe vs Barça, Frank Rijkaard will not be able to call upon two of his star players in Ronaldinho and Deco. Therefore neither Eto'o, Messi, Thuram, Zambrotta, Deco or Ronaldinho will be able to play. The latter two were both given their fifth yellow cards of the season against Athletico which brought about an immediate one game suspension.

Most time on pitch

Ronaldinho is the outfield player who has played the most minutes at camp Nou. Ronnie comes in first with 1,177 minutes, followed close behind by Deco with 1,147. Interestingly, both players will miss the next game against Getafe. Victor Valdes, with 1,421 is the player who has played the most minutes.

Ronaldinho Opens Institute

The Brazilian star opened the Ronaldinho Institute in Port Alegre last night, which will help 3,500 children and teenagers in areas of sport and education. The school will be in full operation in March this year.

The FC Barcelona '10', accompanied by his mother Migelinha, brother Roberto and sister Deisi, was clearly emotional when opening the institute which bears his name. The education centre will help to train and educate children and teenagers from the Hípica district in the South of Port Alegre (Ronaldinhos birth place); a place which runs the risk of social exclusion.

In March

The institute will open its doors in March; the plan being to open on the 21st of March which also happens to fall on Ronaldinho's 27th Birthday. Up to one hundred teachers and doctors will watch over the health and training of the young Brazilians. The centre will also offer sporting activities which, without doubt, make up the principle educational idea of the centre.

The activities

Football, Tennis, athletics, hiking, volleyball etc., are some of the sports to be practised at the Ronaldinho Gaucho centre. The centre takes up a total of 11.7 hectares, where the 3,500 children will also be able to practise IT, music, Theatre and languages.

Players returning late

Deco, Ronaldinho and Márquez all missed the first training session of the year but Gudjohnsen does not think that is any major cause for alarm. "I don't know what their situations are" he said, "but I am sure they will have spoken to the boss and I think they are arriving later because they aren't playing this weekend and that way they can have a bit more holiday. Truth is, I hadnt given any thought to the matter."

He then made an appeal for "us to stick together as a team, but I am sure that their reasons for returning late are good ones. We are professionals and they will be coming back in better condition to serve the team. A lot of us have had 10 days holiday but we were already speaking to each other after just four or four days away, so we are all ready and prepared."
