Barca target Ferdinand...the other one
Quote:
Barcelona are reported to be weighing up a bid for Anton Ferdinand, but believe the West Ham defender could be out of their price range.
Club scouts have attended several West Ham games this season as the Catalan giants are keen to sign a young defensive partner for Carles Puyol.
The Spanish champions have pinpointed three targets who they will begin to look more closely at in April.
Ferdinand is believed to be at the top of the list after scouts watched several recent Hammers matches, while Udinese's Felipe and an unknown player are also being monitored.
The Barca board are ready to ask sponsors to help out with the purchase of one major signing in the summer, with Thierry Henry the most public name, but they do not have a large kitty to reinforce other areas of their squad.
An offer of around €8 million (£5.5 million) is being mooted as an opening bid for Ferdinand, who signed a new deal last month to keep him at Upton Park until 2010.
The Hammers' interest in Gabri may also be considered with the utility player being included as a makeweight in any opening bid.
Barca are keen to sign a rising star and are also watching 21-year-old Felipe at Udinese, a club with whom they have good channels of communication after lengthy negotiations were held last year over a move for Vincenzo Iaquinta. While Rafael Marquez can play in the middle of the back four, Frank Rijkaard is keen to employ a left-sided centre back, while the board are coming to the decision that Oleguer is not up to the grade that his potential suggested.

About time they focus on young defenders.

this has to be some kind of joke, our defence is bad enough and putting an unexperienced CB is only going to make things worse

Also, something interesting in the article. it says that he may be out of your price range at 8 million euros. Does this mean that you dont have any money or is it taking into account that you might sign Henry for a lot of money.

Barça are one of the richest clubs, how can this inexperienced West Ham centre-back be out of their range? Surely thats the nicest way of saying 'no farking way!'.

He is already as good as Marquez and certainly a ton better than Oleguer at both centre back AND right back.
He would be a very good purchase, but perhaps there are more experienced players you should focus on first.
