Mellberg linked with Newcastle move
Olof Mellberg has been linked with a move to Newcastle - if the Magpies sell Jonathan Woodgate to Arsenal.
Speculation is growing that Premiership champions Arsenal could be preparing a summer bid for England star Woodgate.
If that is the case, Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson would have a massive gap to fill in the centre of his defence at St James' Park.
It could also prove to be a problem for Villa as Robson appears to have taken an interest in Swedish international Mellberg.
After watching Mellberg keep Alan Shearer in check at Villa Park earlier this month, Robson was in attendance at The Riverside Stadium last weekend to watch Villa's clash with Middlesbrough.
Villa currently have Mellberg tied down a contract that has another two years left to run at Villa Park.
But David O'Leary seems certain to want the club to try and hammer out an extended deal with Mellberg to ensure that he remains at Villa in the long term.
