Carson signs on loan...
Quote:
Martin O'Neill completed his loan swoop for goalkeeper Scott Carson and reflected: "He has the potential to become absolutely top-class."
The 21-year-old Liverpool man arrives on a season-long loan and will be available for the trip to Newcastle next weekend. O'Neill, who has made no secret of his desire to bolster the goalkeeping options, told Home Page | Aston Villa | HOME "I'm really delighted. I think he's got the potential to be an absolutely top-class goalkeeper. "He's had the year's experience down at Charlton last year, where he did very well, he's carried that on with the England Under-21s and he's ready. With those experiences he now obviously wants to play. "Liverpool have made it abundantly clear that they do not want to sell him and they've mentioned that for quite some considerable time. Their stance has not changes, so a loan is a compromise. "In an ideal world I would have preferred to have had our own players on a permanent basis, but we have him for the year and I'm absolutely delighted. "I asked about Scott some weeks ago and Liverpool's position has never changed. I'm delighted that they've allowed him to come and I'm obviously very pleased that he has."
Having brought in a keeper, O'Neill will now move onto the next target and reiterated his determination to add strength in depth ahead of the August 31 deadline. He added: "We've got a number of weeks yet to go. By the time that transfer deadline is over we will have played three league games, but we will still have 35 left to play. We're in a position to do something about the squad size. "I'm acutely aware of having let players go over the summer time. We need to build the squad up and I would like to get as much quality into the squad as possible. "You can always build up by numbers if that's what you want to do, but I believe that quality should really come first."

In a sense it's a great bit of buisness for Liverpool, Carlson plays for much better team then Charlton pushing for Europe, getting more experince, 2 million and wages.

A few goalkeeper transfers off the top of my head: we bough Foster for £1m 2 years ago. Kuszczak cost us about £2m while we sold Howard for £3m.
Paying £2.5m to have a goalkeeper on loan for a year sounds like a massive rip off to me.

Are we certain the £2.5m doesn't cover his wages too - because even that would be a rip off.
Or could it be a loan with option to buy at £2.5m?
Because those figures just don't sound right.

You normally don't pay a loan fee unless there's option to buy at a set price at the end of it.
I guess you didn't have much alternative,, if you were looking for a keeper - you missed out on Gordon, where to next if you'd missed out on Carson?

jaaskelainen...
problem was with gordon was that romanov wouldnt let us talk to him... even though we had bid the same amount as sunderland...
carson was our first choice though as we bid for him back in june, but that was for a permanent transfer.. that got knocked back as liverpool wanted to keep him, but after carson made waves about wanting first team football, then we went back in and were told only a loan....
its not ideal, but it could be the start of him wanting to join permamently... so im keeping my fingers crossed....
if not, then jaaskelained is available on a free at the end of the season...
so theres logic to the deal....
