SCOTT CARSON will make his Aston Villa debut tomorrow and step up his campaign to be England’s No1 goalkeeper.

Carson was left out of the Under-21 squad and is expected to be named in today’s full squad for next week’s friendly against Germany.

At Villa Park on a season’s loan from Liverpool, Carson made the switch because England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence said his international future depended on it.

Villa manager Martin O’Neill hopes to make Carson a £10million permanent signing, breaking the British record for a goalkeeper in the process, and believes he is potentially England’s No1.

“I haven’t spoken to Steve McClaren, but at the end of last season, during the last couple of games when I was with England, I spoke to Ray Clemence,” said Carson.

“He said this was going to be a big season for me and I needed to be playing regularly. Coming to Villa will give me that opportunity.

“I’d like to think I can get my first full cap this season. Even if it’s only a friendly and I get a half or something, I’d be delighted. It would top the last couple of years off for me.

“I had a few weeks’ break after the European Under-21 Championships and all the time I was thinking this season was going to be so big and I needed to play games.

“I knew I’d have no chance of playing for England if I was just No2 at Liverpool, playing Carling Cup or FA Cup games. You can only further your career by playing games.

“Liverpool’s manager Rafa Benitez understood and gave me the opportunity to go on loan. It’s down to me to show everyone I am capable of playing in the Premier League and then take it on to the next step.”

Carson was unable to play for Villa against Liverpool last week because of League rules governing loan transfers, but is expected to start his new career tomorrow. He was on loan to Charlton for the whole of last season and finished as their player of the season.

“I feel I am a better goalkeeper from just that one season,” said Carson. “I want to improve the things I learnt last season.

“I enjoyed playing every week and it gave me a taste for the Premier League. I just want to taste it again.

“There were a couple of other clubs interested but I didn’t speak to any of them. As soon as I came to Villa and met the manager my mind was made up.

“There are a few English goalkeepers in the Premier League now and hopefully I can be one of them. I want to get in the England senior squad more regularly and get a few caps. This is a big season with next year’s European Championships.”

Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce says Carson can make himself England’s first choice. “He has the credentials. He has a calm temperament, he showed that in the summer with us,” said Pearce. “If Carson can get regular first-team football, that will stand him in good stead.”

Carson is also looking to stay with Villa. “Part of the loan agreement with Liverpool is that it could turn permanent,” he said. “We’ll see what happens, but if I’m happy, Aston Villa are happy and Liverpool are happy – then you never know.”

What's obvious is that Carson have no future on Anfield aslong Reina stays with the reds. He has no chance to bench Reina and he will leave Liverpool next summer.
