The 27-year-old centre-back will be reunited with former Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez who is now in charge at Craven Cottage.

"I am happy to have signed before the start of pre-season, which gives me the opportunity of being with the lads on day one."

Hughes has 44 international caps and made 50 league starts during his two seasons at Villa Park.

I think he's decent and he can play in any position in defense.At least he was when he played at Newcastle.Haven't seen him much this season for Villa.

delighted he has gone and even more delighted that we managed to mug someone else for 1m for him....

gash player and always one whos mistakes at the back caused us to concede...

and he was crap going forward too...

average at his very best, but the rest of the time, absolute garbage...

a model professional though and never complained...

Well, I guess he's happy to make millions on football with his average skills and that's why he never complains.

Makes sense - he'll know Sanchez from Northern Ireland. I think he may be playing in the Championship next year.

I've always liked Hughes. As Andy says; he's a honest pro.
