Randy Lerner insists Claret and Blue success, not financial profit is his only motivation at Villa Park.

And the Villa owner insists he would not sell the club even if he were offered a 'double your money' deal.

Instead, Lerner points to John Carew's brilliant winner against West Ham last weekend as the sort of 'payback' he wants for his massive investment.

The sudden influx of wealthy American investors onto the Premiership scene has aroused suspicion in some quarters.

But, while he cannot speak for others, Villa's owner is not here to make a financial killing. He commented: "If someone could tell me how to make a profit from a football club, I'd like to know.

"What's my prime motive? It's certainly not financial. Who's ever done well buying a club? It baffles me.

"Would I sell Villa to a wealthy Arab if he gave me a 'Double your money' deal? No, no, no, no, no!"

The Villa chairman continued: "I see this as a lifetime type of thing. Some people just don't buy it though. I know they think: 'What's the catch?' and I don't blame them. In the end actions will allay all those fears.

"Villa has grown on me since I've been here. I have been treated so graciously and with so much support that I literally pinch myself.

"If you had the chance to sit on the stage and be second guitarist with Bob Dylan at the Royal Albert Hall, would you be talking about what you were going to get paid that night?

"My return from Aston Villa is seeing Carew score. I want a life of good sport, good people and the competition that goes with it.

"I'm not saying you can't make any profit. I'm saying that it would not motivate you to go and acquire a club.

"You can get more out of buying a 30-year bond - I'd be poolside and cordless, but where's the fun?"

Malcolm Glazer today pledged to reduce ticket prices at Old Trafford to 9 pence, before handing the club to the supporters and stringing himself up to be subjected to a public flogging.

He apologised to fans, saying "I'm sorry it's taken so long to get round to it, but I've been busy trying to cure cancer in my basement. However now I've managed that I thought I should prove my doubters wrong."

Keen to quash rumours that there were limited transfer funds available, he added "I'm ashamed to say I blew last season's budget paying off Third World Debt, but now I am fully committed to the club and have arranged deals to bring in Torres, Gerrard, Ronaldinho, Henry, and Terry this summer."
