Chairman Doug Ellis has stressed there will not be any cash made available for recruits and the manager backed up this view.

With Lee Hendrie being strongly linked with a move to Portsmouth, the Villa boss was also quick to deny there would be any outgoings either.

"As the chairman has stated, there will be nobody coming into this club, financially or probably loan-wise," he told Sky Sports News. "So there's no activity for us in this window.

"I can't believe I hear all these rumours when the chairman has said and it's been stated in the papers that nothing will be happening at this club.

"We keep getting this speculation [such as with Robert Huth of Chelsea] but I don't think we can make it any clearer.

"I've got to get on with it," he sighed. "And accept anything. When you work for whatever chairman, he's the boss and you go along with what he has to say.

so much for the 3 mil for the central defender both the fans and dol were promised in the summer...

i say it again, strange that this takeover bollocks comes about at the time of the agm, and now at the time that we have found out about MORE lies from that lying sack of crap ellis....

Are you the only club not buying in this window, seems like the rest of the premiership clubs have been after all sorts already.

ULISES de la Cruz is understood to be seeking talks with David O'Leary to see if he can be allowed to leave on a free transfer to preserve his World Cup place.

The Ecuador defender has been linked to Leeds, Rangers and Celtic but O'Leary has admitted he is reluctant to let the former Hibs player leave and would sell only if the price was right.

O'Leary said: "Since his agent came to see me a few weeks ago I haven't heard a thing. Not one person has phoned.

"The agent asked me if we would let him go if we had an offer and I said that I didn't want to let him go because the squad is small enough as it is.

"I don't want to lose 'Uli' but I can't stop someone coming in with an offer which I would then submit to the board for consideration.

"My belief is that he did his television interview to drum up some business but that business hasn't come to me, or to my chief scout Ian Broomfield."

Another source of possible income, the £1million-plus sale of Mathieu Berson to Auxerre, is unlikely to transpire until the end of the season.

Berson has impressed as a first-team regular while out on a season long loan, but O'Leary appears set to have to wait before the club can net any cash.

He said: "My understanding is that he loves it back over there and the club love him as well.

"Ian Broomfield believes their outlook is that they have him until the end of the season anyway, so why would they have to tie up monies now?"

A foreign loan remains an outside possibility because such a deal would involve Villa paying out a loan fee. And that has been stringently opposed by Doug Ellis in the past, with the chairman admitting after securing Carlton Cole from Chelsea last season that he was against paying out a sum for loan transfers.

Meanwhile, O'Leary scoffed at weekend reports linking him with Juventus defender Igor Tudor.

The Villa manager said: "We know all about him but that was the biggest load of rubbish out."

He has also denied any interest in Austrian international striker Sanel Kuljic despite stories that he was about to offer the 27-year-old a trial.

its sad that we are so broke that loan deals and free transfers are out of our reach...

the takeover seems to have collapsed, so the excuse that we are not making deals due to that is rubbish, especially as we are actually looking to sell players, eg, hendrie, djemba, de la cruz, etc...

coupled with losing bakke, berson will be gone in the summer, and milner will be back to the barcodes...

so thats 6 going out and no money to bring anyone else in to our already **** poor sized squad...

sad sad days ahead..

That means there will be no new arrivals at the club during the January transfer window - news which comes as a huge blow to O'Leary.

"It's a big disappointment," he confided to Sky Sports News. "The chairman informed me he [Bakke] had to be sent back for financial reasons - it's as simple as that.

"He was supposed to be here until the end of January and I wanted to keep him until the end of the season.

"I was disappointed, like the players, as we're particularly short in that department.

"I know I can't bring anybody in and I was trying to keep hold of what I had. There will be nobody coming in here."

thanks doug....

really needed to make the squad smaller while others are strengthening to avoid relegation...

it really shows our ambition....
