"The fans will be angry with what happened. I was angry."
O'Leary admitted he had some harsh words for "one or two individuals" after going out of the cup, but refused to say which players came under fire.
He said: "I am ashamed about the other night. I take full responsibility for what happened. It was my fault.
"The buck stops with me. I was ashamed of what happened in the 90 minutes and the same applies to my players.
"I pick the team. I am responsible for results. I can't quite understand what happened on Tuesday.
"Some of the team didn't have the same hunger for success that I have. It was a competition we had a chance of winning but we were a mere shadow of ourselves."
O'Leary is hopeful of being given time as well as funds to improve his side, who are down in 15th in the Premiership.
He added: "We still need more quality players after the cutbacks we've had to make.
"There isn't a lot of money about and it is going to take time to put together the kind of side we want."

Then we stood like lemmings for about 20 secs until I said "now are we going to get three points this weekend Doug, after all it came true after you promised them at the AGM". At this point, and being totally serious here, you could see the hurt in the man at the way we had capitulated at Doncaster. A big sigh and "I hope so" and then he said we need at least 6 points from the next three games, Newcastle, Bolton and Man Utd. Both myself and Dave (from my office) raised our eyebrows at this comment. Dave then said to him, "if we can get a bit more passion from the manager then maybe we'll be getting somewhere". He said I know what you mean, but forgive me if I don't comment with all of these press around. We said no worries and thanks, he also thanked us for our support which was good.
