Default Arsenal to make record bid for Miguel Veloso

Premier League club Arsenal are set to make an offer for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso according to his agent Paulo Barbosa.

The 22-year-old Portuguese International has been at Sporting since 2006, and has been linked with a host of European teams this summer, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all being linked, as well as Serie A giants AC Milan and Juventus.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is an admirer of Veloso and sees him as a tailor made replacement for Matthieu Flamini, who will be leaving the Emirates this summer for Juventus.

Veloso, who has seven caps for Portugal has a buy-out clause in his contract of £23.7million(€30m), but it is believed that Wenger is going to test the resolve of the Verde-e-Brancos with a club record transfer bid of £18million(€22.7m).

“We did not have normal contact from the Arsenal board, but from a member of the technical staff at the club," said Barbosa.

"At the moment there is not a formal offer yet, but it is possible that will happen soon”

Veloso is a stuck-up, fashionista, who only cares about what style of hair he prefers.

I admit, When MV is on his game, he plays well but mentally, he's weak.

Moutinho is someone of interest but he's staying with Sporting.

£18m for Miguel Veloso? Can't see it happening. Wenger rarely spends big money on his gambles, and thats exactly what Veloso would be. He hasnt proven himself consistently at international or even European level yet.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could step up his interest in Sporting Lisbon’s Miguel Veloso.

Italian rivals Juventus ended their pursuit of the talented Portuguese midfielder last week.

With pre-season training resuming tomorrow for those Gunners not involved in international action over the summer or recovering from injury like Tomas Rosicky, Bacary Sagna and Abou Diaby, the Arsenal manager will soon see first hand just what he has available for the battles ahead.

Arsenal's pre-season programme is scheduled to begin in earnest when the full squad travel to Austria on July 21 as they prepare for their Champions League qualifier.

The future of Emmanuel Adebayor remains up in the air and Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Newcastle's Obafemi Martins and Roque Santa Cruz, currently at Blackburn, are all potential targets, while any move for Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin seems to depend on what happens with Alexander Hleb.

An end to the protracted transfer of long-time target Samir Nasri may be in sight, while Portugal Under-21 international Amaury Bischoff is another who claims he is on his way to the Emirates after German side Werder Bremen announced his departure.
