Arsenal's Denilson suffers injury

Quote:
An injury to Denilson put a dampener on Arsenal's first game without Thierry Henry as they secured a 2-0 victory at Barnet.

The Brazilian midfielder was carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury late on following a heavy tackle although the injury is not thought to be too serious.

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is facing at least two weeks on the sidelines after suffering an Achilles injury in Germany's win over England.

Lehmann, who has made a series of high-profile errors in the opening weeks of the season, aggravated an existing problem in Germany's 2-1 victory at Wembley.

And Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will now be without his No 1 for Saturday's Premier League clash with leaders Manchester City.

Lehmann will also miss the second leg of the Gunners' Champions League qualifier against Sparta Prague at Emirates Stadium and the home clash with Portsmouth on September 2.

Wenger said: "Jens is out and he will miss two weeks, I think. Maybe more. I don't know.

"He is going to see a specialist in Germany. He had this injury before but it has got much worse."

The veteran shot-stopper gifted David Healy a quickfire opener in Arsenal's 2-1 win over Fulham on the opening weekend, and was again at fault as he allowed David Dunn's shot to slip through his hands in the draw at Blackburn.

Lehmann also looked shaky at times during the Wembley victory, but England failed to take advantage, with Michael Owen particularly culpable.

Wenger will now turn to Manuel Almunia in Lehmann's absence, with summer signing Lukasz Fabianski acting as back-up.

I think this a good thing for the gunners

Default Next Match: Arsenal vs Portsmouth (9/2/07)

Arsène Wenger feels the ‘Emirates Stadium bogey’ has been replaced this season by the ‘Emirates Stadium effect’.

Arsenal have played three home games this term and have registered three wins. The only goal they have conceded came 52 seconds in to the new campaign when David Healy profited on an error by Jens Lehmann.

It is perhaps ironic that Sunday’s opponents are Portsmouth because last season’s fixture between these clubs on December 16 was a watershed in Arsenal's season at Emirates.

Noe Pamerot and Matt Taylor gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with goals either side of half time. By the hour mark Emmanuel Adebayor and Gilberto had hauled Arsenal level. But it was still another draw and, at full time, Wenger’s home record in the Premiership read: P9 W4 D5 L0. However the struggle would end there. After Portsmouth, they rattled up a record of P10 W8 D1 L1 including five straight victories.

“We are [over that] I feel,” said Wenger on Friday. “We were a little bit surprised at the start of last season but after six or seven months I feel we feel at home now. We are now like any other Premiership team when we play at home. You win the game when you are at your best.

“Overall I am very happy with the spirit of the side at the moment. I have a strong belief in the quality of my team and that has been justified in what I have seen on the pitch.

“We have built up a momentum in the Premier League at home and we want to take advantage of that on Sunday.”

Wenger will wait on Alex Hleb who went ill on Friday morning. Otherwise the roll call of injuries is the same as midweek: Emmanuel Eboue (ankle), William Gallas (groin), Bacary Sagna (back) and Jens Lehmann (Achilles).

Portsmouth have started the Premiership season well. Their four games have included a credible point against Manchester United and a hard-fought defeat at Chelsea.

“They have real quality,” said Wenger. “Portsmouth are a very shrewd club with Harry Redknapp in charge. He always buys good players. He came to Arsenal and took a few from us.

“They have a very strong spine. Sylvain Distin, Sol Campbell and David James at the back. Kanu and Lauren too. They are very intelligent and I feel those former Arsenal players means when they come to us they are always highly motivated.

“Portsmouth are a team with physical strength, tactical strength and lots of experience.

“Their last performance against Chelsea was very good. On the evidence of what we saw they could have taken a point.

“There is quality that is we must be very careful against this side. We just want to continue our run and be on our toes.”

2-0, Fabregas scored before a scramble began in the box, good reflexes, game pretty much over, I've flicked over to the Juve game now...
