Four injured Arsenal players should be back in training by the end of the week. Jens Lehmann came back into full training on Thursday, while William Gallas, Tomas Rosicky and Alex Song should be in training on Friday. However, none will be fit enough to feature in Arsenal's game against Sunderland on Sunday.

Robin van Persie could be facing a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury while representing his country. The striker limped off on the hour mark during Holland's clash Euro 2008 Group G qualifier against Slovenia. Van Persie fell awkwardly and appeared to badly twist his knee, leaving Arsene Wenger with an anxious wait over the news of his star man.

There's a few injuries about at Arsenal. Wenger is considering asking Toure back early, after his Nations Cup exit:

Quote:
Arsene Wenger is hoping to have Kolo Toure back from the Africa Cup of Nations in time for Monday's game with Blackburn.

The Ivory Coast international is due to represent his country in the third/fourth play-off game on Saturday but, with Arsenal currently short of numbers at the back, Wenger is hoping to persuade him to then make a quick dash back to England.

With Johan Djourou struggling with a groin injury and Philippe Senderos aggravating a knee problem while playing for Switzerland against England in midweek, Wenger admits that he is running out of options.

Cover

"I have not called Kolo yet, but I will try to see if he can take a flight from Accra to London, as Ivory Coast play on Saturday afternoon," he said.

"Otherwise it will be Gilberto, or Justin Hoyte at centre-half. Overall we are very, very short and it is down to the bare bones."

Positive

Senderos will be given as much time as possible though to prove his fitness in time for the Rovers clash and could yet line up against Mark Hughes' side.

"Philippe Senderos came off injured in midweek with a medial knee ligament and is a major doubt," Wenger added.

"He has played with it before and we will see on Monday. I don't rule him out completely and he is positive about it.

"However, our medical team are a bit less. He wants to test it out over the weekend."

Rested

Another defensive player who looks likely to miss Monday's game is Abou Diaby, who despite reporting for international duty with France this week is actually carrying a calf injury.

"Diaby, in fairness, picked his injury up last week at Man City," Wenger said.

"We sent him on international duty with information explaining that he was injured and France did not play him."

Arsenal are set to be without Bacary Sagna for at least three weeks.

The French defender scored at Stamford Bridge last Sunday but then injured his ankle in the latter stages of the game. Speaking to Arsenal TV Online on Thursday, the manager called Sagna's loss as "completely disruptive" that day and now it appears he will have to find cover at right back until mid-April at best. Or, at worst, the end of that month.

"He has an ankle injury and the first news that we have is that he could be out for quite a while," said the manager. "I don't know [exactly] how long he will be out but I feel it will be three weeks at least. Five is the [worst case scenario].

"I have seen the injury again on tape. He wanted to kick the ball out and he twisted his ankle. That made it a bad injury."

Otherwise Wenger was able to report a clean bill of health from the midweek internationals. Therefore, along with Sagna, the only absences are Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) and Eduardo (broken leg/dislocated ankle).

"The international players are not all back yet," he said at lunchtime on Thursday. "But we have no real bad news. I have not spoken to some of them on the phone but if they were injured then they would have called. So it does not look bad."

Default Rosicky Out For The Season

Tomas Rosicky's season is definitely over for Arsenal and possibly also the Czech Republic.

Czech international Rosicky limped out of Arsenal's FA Cup win over Newcastle back in January after suffering a knee injury. He has been unable to feature for his club or country ever since.

It has now been confirmed that Rosicky will remain sidelined for rest of the Gunners' season, as they bid for glory in both the Premier and Champions Leagues, and he is also facing an anxious wait to see whether he will be fit to play for his country in the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland this summer.

The Czech Republic's team doctor, Petr Krejci, is in regular contact with the midfielder and admits that the situation is anything but promising.

"It is possible that the problem could fade away in two weeks, but it could also last for another three months," Krejci told Sport.

"Since he has already been out for two months, we are in a tricky situation. Karel [Bruckner, the Czech Republic's national team manager] is also very worried about it. Tomas is a big player for us and he would be a big loss.

"He can run and jog now, but when he does it for a prolonged period of time it begins to hurt him. He would be afraid of sprinting at the moment and as such he is yet to resume full training. We are not prepared to risk him ahead of Euro 2008.

"He is already resigned to missing the rest of the Premier League season, so his priority now is the European Championships."

The deputy chairman of the Czech Football Federation (CMFS), Vlastimil Kostal, is also concerned that even if Rosicky recovers in time to be included in the squad for the Euro finals, his fitness levels would probably be below those required for a tough international competition.

"If I am being honest I am worried that he will not be fit enough for Euro 2008," he said. "From the point of view that he will not have done enough training, it is not certain that he would be well prepared."

If Rosicky should be ruled out of the summer tournament, there is likely to be a call for Pavel Nedved to return from international retirement. Nedved has already done so once before in order to feature in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

Justin Hoyte limped out of the reserve side's 5-1 victory against Derby on Monday night. The Leytonstone-born 23-year-old pulled up five minutes before the interval with a minor hamstring injury.

However, his withdrawal was a precaution rather than a significant problem.

Reserve team manager Neil Banfield told the club's official website: "Justin felt his hamstring tighten up so we decided to take him off.

"The doctors have examined him and he feels it is more tightness than any real muscle strain."

Tomas Rosicky should be fully fit for the start of next season after undergoing surgery on his troublesome knee injury.
