I want to start this thread with the most exciting(imo) quote about messi: (pity it's in spanish)
Maradona:"messi puede ser mejor que yo"
(Maradona:"messi can be better than me")
Quote:
|
"Leo es genial. Quizás esté un escalón debajo de Ronaldinho, quien empezó antes. Pero cuidado, que Messi lo está alcanzando". Las palabras de Diego Maradona tras la victoria albiceleste reflejan el protagonismo que ha adquirido Leo en su selección.
|
"leo is genious. maybe he's considered one step below ronaldinho, who started before. but watch out! messi is catching up."
Quote:
|
¿Te gustó Messi?“¡Cómo no me va a gustar! Como dije hace un instante, cuando me lo preguntaron, me encantaría tocar balones y armar paredes con Riquelme y con Messi, pero ya no puedo. Entonces, los aliento desde la grada. Messi tiene todo para ser una figura, aún le queda un largo camino, pero puede ser mejor que yo. Igual, Messi es Messi y yo soy yo. Lo quiero mucho,
|
"messi has everything to become a star that will last long, he has a long way to do, but he can be better than me"(!)

here's a more bombastic quote:
Francescoli:"Messi es el mejor hoy y lo sera en el futuro"
(Francescoli:"Messi is the best today, and he will be better in the future")
'el principe'(the prince) - Enzo Francescoli - the best uruguay player in history, is one of the best people to ever play the game.
francescoli said that in his opinion messi is the best player in the world today. he had also some good words about kaka and ronaldinho.

I don't think he can be the next Maradona, Diego was just on another planet.
Can Messi challenge the top players today?? Possibly, but at this moment in time, I'm no so certain. I need to see more of him, leading his team to victory or dominating his peers.
He still has a long way to go to be compared to such great players, and ways to go to challenge the "elite" of today.

you mean you want to see him in seria A .. possible. would be good for him.
I don't think he can be compared to maradona yet, by the abilities, titles etc.. but his comparison to maradona started not only because of his abilities.. but because of many other things.
argentina can't exist without a 'maradona', that's our problem since maradona retired, if you try to play without a no.10, you'll never succeed in argentina, that's what they tried to do in WC2k2... 90% of the teams in the world play without a #10 ( a diego #10), but in argentina it's impossible! that's hard for people to understand.. you must worrk hard to understand that...
and since messi showed up, it's clear for argentinians that he is the ultimate #10, messi is the closest to maradona today. not about abilities but about this #10 problem, he is the closest. messi is taking the #10 to his feet, slowly (maybe not) but he'll gain full control on that. and when he gets full control of the argentina NT (it will happen.. someone said 2010??), then, we can find out if messi is the real thing, then we'll wait that messi brings titles to argentina, after that we can realy compare him to diego.

I think he's "the next Maradona" in that he fills the Maradona role more closely than any other player does for Argentina-- pretty much I agree with what lionel just said.
Is he as good as Maradona? No, of course not... but he's very young still, and in the future, who knows?
Plus, "Those Goals". Even if Messi were to never play another game, there is an incredibly eerie similarity between his goal against Getafe, his handball goal, and the two corresponding Maradona goals. It's so creepy that it's practically beyond words: every decent young Argentine player gets pegged as "the next Maradona" at some point, but how many of them have precisely recreated Maradona's two most famous gaols? Whether it proves to be "a sign" of greatness to come or becomes in retrospect merely a very eerie novelty, only time will tell.

for the people who disagree with the messi-maradona comparison, those similar goals say nothig to you? have you seen 2 goals so similar and unique at the same time, anywhere else? can you give me an example of a goal that was scored only twice, and the two times, it was scored exactly the same way (I'm talking here about the 'vs. getafe' goal)?
I'm not saying here that those goals made me compare leo to diego, but that's a very interesting thing that should make everybody wonder... even those who can't agree a bit with this comparison.
and the hand of god. wich other player in the world scored with his hand? and in a so obvious and smart way, I'm not saying a goal in the street with your friends, but a goal when 4 referees are watching you... I can't remember a player scoring that way, other than than the 2 gifted humans: diego and leo! (if someone has a video of a goal with the hand, I'll be happy to take a look)

I don't think Messi is the next Maradona but of the Argentine talents to be dubbed "the next Maradona" (Saviola, Aimar, D'allesandro. Ortega, Riquelme etc.) he has the biggest potential for greatness.
Messi also has the advantage of being at a club that seem to adore him and look like they'll never force him out (like Barca and Saviola and Riquelme).
I think he's already scored many amazing goals despite only just turning 20 last month and he could well become a player on tier with the Platini's and Beckenbauer's, maybe not as good as Maradona in my opinion but he still has a long was to go in his career to prove a legend status.
