Boca close on title after another troubled weekend
BUENOS AIRES, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors won 2-1 at Gimnasia-Jujuy to move closer to the title on another troubled weekend for the Argentine championship, which has been plagued by violence and intimidation off the field.
Boca stayed four points clear of Diego Simeone's Estudiantes, who scored twice in stoppage-time to come from behind for a 2-1 win at Newell's Old Boys, their ninth successive victory.
But the weekend's action on the pitch was overshadowed when the fans of Racing Club and San Lorenzo blocked their respective team buses and forced the match to be called off.
The fans, who jumped up and down in celebration on hearing that the match had been postponed, were angry at a decision to order the Buenos Aires derby to be played behind closed doors in La Plata, 60 kilometres away.
There were rumours that the rest of Sunday's games would be called off as well but they went ahead after Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Julio Grondona warned that teams who did not turn up would have points docked.
It was the latest twist in the tournament in which two other games were postponed at short notice and three suspended during the course of the match because of crowd violence.
All the weekend's games were played without away fans, who have been banned for the rest of the year by the AFA in a bid to clamp down on violence.
A booming free kick by central defender Daniel Diaz in the 64th minute gave Boca the points on their long trip north to Jujuy.
Neri Cardozo had finished off a sweeping move to give Boca the lead against the run of play in the 26th minute but Gimnasia-Jujuy replied through Gabriel Ramon in first-half stoppage-time.
Boca have 41 points from 16 games with three to play.
The real drama was at Newell's, where Estudiantes took full advantage of referee Hector Baldassi's decision to add on six minutes of stoppage-time.
Paraguay striker Oscar Cardozo gave Newell's the lead on the half hour.
Estudiantes, showing the fighting spirit which was the hallmark of coach Simeone in the days when he captained Argentina, levelled through 35-year-old striker Jose Luis Calderon in the first minute of stoppage-time.
Three minutes later, 17-year-old forward Pablo Piatti scored the winner for Estudiantes.

With a steady gait (19/11/06)
Boca beat Gimnasia de Jujuy in a hard-fought away game by 2-1. Boca’s goals were scored by Neri Cardozo and Daniel Díaz, the latter by means of a freekick, one goal in each half of the match. Gabriel Ramón had established a provisional draw for Gimnasia.
The match began with both teams frequently reaching the rival box. Boca got more often to the opponent area, while the local team preferred to attack along the sides and to send in crosses into Boca’s area, but these proved to be ineffective.
The game was even until minute 26 of the first half, when Neri Cardozo went forward having the ball under control and fired a shot from outside the area which proved impossible to stop for the local goalie.
Gimnasia’s equalizer was the last play of the first half: Gabriel Ramón picked up the ball in Boca’s area, which had been sent in by a cornershot, and fired at Bobadilla’s near post. 1 to 1.
The second half took off the same way as the first one. At 17’ Gago was fouled near the local area. Daniel Díaz took charge of the freekick and sealed the game’s score with a formidable right-footer.
Boca continues to edge Estudiantes by 4 points and is on its way toward the triple championship when there are only three rounds to go in the Apertura tournament.

"There are a few finals to go"
Boca is solidly installed at the top of the Apertura tournament. There are three rounds to go to the end of the championship and Boca has a four-point edge on Estudiantes de La Plata, its closest escort.
On Sunday Boca will face Colón in the Bombonera. If the local team wins and Estudiantes should lose against Racing, Boca will have won the tournament title. Anyway, coach La Volpe prefers to think of each match as a final.
La Volpe spoke about everything in an interview granted to the newspaper Crónica. About Boca’s chance to be the champion, the criticism he met when he took over the team, the changes the team underwent during his tenure, his continuity as Boca’s coach and the violence that plagues soccer. What follows are the salient excerpts of the interview:
THE PATH TOWARD THE TITLE: "There are still a few finals to play… three games, nine points, in other words, three finals. Now the objective is this final against Colón”.
THE CRITICISM HE MET WHEN HE TOOK OVER: "I took it in my stride, I knew the risk I was taking when I shouldered this responsibility. Firstly, because I was conscious of the fact that if things turned out well it would be something I hadn’t done. The foundations of the team had been laid by another coach, Alfio Basile, it was he who set up this team. That was clear from the start. Maybe I tried to explain that I didn’t have any big changes in mind”.
THE TRANSFORMATION: "What I tried to do was to convince the player to add a plus to the squad. The team improved its performance as it went along and I practically ended with a 4-3-3 scheme. Although, in truth, this is deceptive, because instead of having the tactician play behind Palacio and Palermo, I shoved the twin to the right side. I was trying to have the team continue along its established soccer pattern, unfortunately today I’m faced with Guille’s injury. Now I’ll have to see what to do”.
BASILE: "Of course I respect Basile. He has an experience ten times greater than mine. I imagine that his philosophy is the same as mine, as Menotti’s, Saporiti’s, and even “Chiche” Sosa’s….. I know all this because I’ve been having a cup of coffee with them. I even know Merlo. Whenever I returned to the country I also talked to Russo”.
THE LIBERTADORES CUP: "We all want to win the Libertadores Cup. For that, reinforcements in some key positions will be necessary. We have a great squad, but some positions need to be reinforced. But for the time being I’m only thinking of the present tournament.
THE VIOLENCE: "It was evident that the security in the stadiums and fields was getting out of control. I don’t know how many people dare to take their kids to watch a soccer match, or their girlfriends or wives. In Mexico this doesn’t happen. You may see a kid wearing a shirt of Cruz Azul and next to him his brother with América’s jersey”.-
