Default Howard gets another clean sheet vs Arsenal:

yes there were some reserves playing but it was still Arsenal.
Good job Timmy!

If he keeps this up they'll have to give him another shot.

Some reserves? No one who played for either team is a part of the first XI.

boring game, howard didn't have to do much, I wish United would play Spector, he was great in the 3 matches he played early on with the senior squad.

Howard also got lucky with an early mistake that ended up with no harm done. I'm not sure he's displacing Carrol anytime soon.

howard looked dodgy whenever he got near the ball
manure picked several players who have started a lot of games this season

Default 12-8-04 champions league:

just a note before anyone bashes Howard for giving up the 3 goals today:

watch the replays first,

1 was a flat out gollasso!
the 2nd on a set piece, the guy was un-marked
the 3rd was on a breakaway with only 1 defender visible on the replay.

the only regular that played was Ronaldo.............

Actually Sky Sports gave him a pretty good rating.

In Italy, Fabio Cappello left Roma to coach Juventus (the current leader in Serie A) and was replaced by Cesare Prandelli. Prandelli left quickly because of an illness to his wife and was replaced by Rudi Völler (whose German team was ousted in the first round of the European Championships). Völler lasted four games and was replaced by ... Del Neri.

BALANCE OF TRADE Clint Mathis (Hannover 96) is coming back to the United States, Kasey Keller (Tottenham) has talked about coming back to the United States and Tim Howard (Manchester United) may be thinking about coming back to the United States after struggling in England. Going the other way, DaMarcus Beasley (PSV Eindhoven), Landon Donovan (Bayer Leverkusen), Bobby Convey (Reading) and Adin Brown (Aalesund FK/Norway) are the latest to join the ranks of Yanks abroad.

UNITED STATES WOMEN The golden generation went out in style, winning the gold medal at the Summer Games in Athens. Mia Hamm, Carla Overbeck and Julie Foudy retired from the national team this month. Although Hamm lost her bid for another FIFA World Player of the Year award - it went to Birgit Prinz of Germany - she ended her 17-year international career with 158 goals. The players on the women's national team are also without a contract. There will be new players, perhaps a new coach and few games for the team in 2005 leading up to the next Women's World Cup, in China in 2007.

LEND LEASE Three young Americans - Jonathan Spector (Manchester United), Frank Simek and Daniel Karbassiyoon (Arsenal) - were loaned to other clubs by their English Premier League teams. Spector's destination is Blackburn, Karbassiyoon's is Ipswich Town and Simek's is Queens Park Rangers. "It's part of their football education," said United's Sir Alex Ferguson, referring to Spector, of the practice of shipping youngsters so they can have regular playing time.

PLAYERS TO WATCH IN '05 Robinho (Santos), Freddy Adu (D.C. United), Adriano (Inter Milan), Arjen Robben (Chelsea), Diego (Porto), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow).

RACISM The Spanish federation was fined $80,000 by FIFA after fans taunted England's black players during two exhibition matches last month. There were other incidents of racial taunting in Greece and Eastern Europe.

DEATH ON THE FIELD Two Brazilian players - Serginho of Săo Caetano and Cristian Junior of Dempo F.C. in India - died on the field after having heart attacks.
