3. U.S. ABROAD: Eddie Lewis strikes in promotion playoff
Eddie Lewis played a superb game and scored with a curling free kick with 16 minutes left to give Leeds a 1-1 with Preston North End in the first leg of their semifinal playoff for English Premier League promotion. ... In the other semifinal, Watford, with American defender Jay DeMerit going the full 90, downed Crystal Palace, 3-0.

U.S. ABROAD: Eddie Lewis' Premier League hopes alive
Leeds United downed Preston North End, 2-0, to advance 3-1 on aggregate to the final of the playoffs for promotion to the English Premier League. American Eddie Lewis, who scored in the 1-1 semifinal first leg, started and went 87 minutes.
In a game plagued by scuffles and crude tackling, Leeds players received 10 cards, including two reds, Preston striker Brett Ormerod suffered a broken leg, and the start of the second half was delayed for 25 minutes because of a power outage.
Lewis, a member of the U.S. World Cup squad, played three seasons for Preston before moving to Leeds last offseason.
In the final, Leeds is likely to meet Watford, which enters its second leg against Crystal Palace with a 3-0 lead. If Watford advances, Lewis will face off with fellow American Jay DeMerit.

Hornets tighten relegation race
Championship basement club Leeds United are crossing their fingers that nicked flanker Eddie Lewis will be able to suit up when they travel to Cardiff on Saturday.
Fresh from a win last weekend, the Whites could climb clear out of the relegation zone with three points at the Millennium.
Lewis got the nod in the Crystal Palace win, but limped off just after the hour
"At the moment, he could well be fit (for Cardiff)," Leeds press liaison Don Waters told YA. "He had an ankle injury before the last game, but he was fit enough to play."
"Then he took a knock on the ankle (against Crystal Palace). He's receiving treatment."
The injury-hit Elland Road crew are banking on the US star's participation this weekend, but can't assure it as of yet.
"We hope so," remarked Waters. "We've had enough (absences) this season. It doesn't look like anything serious, but we'll know more tomorrow."
After helping Leeds reach the promotion final last term, Lewis has notched two goals in his second campaign with the club, with many of his 30 appearances coming at left back.
