Demerit lands in Hornets' nest
The ranks of Americans in the English Championship grew by one as former University of Chicago-Illinois defender Jay Demerit signed a season-long deal with Watford.
Demerit, 24, had been training with the Hornets this entire preseason, and has done well to impress manager Ray Lewington and the club enough to be offered a contract. With the ability through his family to avoid the obstacle of a work permit, Demerit will need to work his way from playing in the PDL in the United States two years ago to non-league football in England into the Watford first team.
Demerit scored a goal in a reserve match Wednesday for Watford, seemingly the final step to winning a contract from the club. He officially joins Watford from Ryman side Northwood. In an interview with Watford's official website, Demerit was understandably happy with landing in the Hornets' nest.
"I'm ecstatic Ray has decided to give me a chance,'' said Demerit."I came here, worked hard in training and on the pitch, so I'm delighted he has shown faith in me.
"Playing against Watford was actually the first game I had played for Northwood and I could never have imagined that a couple of weeks later I would be playing for a Championship team. It's funny how things have quickly turned around for me. But I have shown what I've got, and I always thought that eventually someone would take that into consideration and take a chance on me."
Demerit played on the college level for four years, but was left undrafted by Major League Soccer despite a season with the Chicago Fire reserves in 2002.
Watford is relatively thin at central defense, where Neil Cox and team captain Sean Dyche are currently the first choice as partners in the middle of the backline. Demerit could see time immediately due to injury or loss of form.

Jay DeMerit
Made his debut for Watford last night against Cambridge. Watford won 1-0.
He is an American centre back. Ray Lewington, Watford manager rates him highly
