Default Brian McBride [Fulham] score the winner

McBride out 3 to 5 weeks with eye injury

The Associated Press
7/29/03 6:45 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- U.S. forward Brian McBride broke a bone near his left eye in last week's game against Brazil and will be sidelined for three-to-five weeks.

McBride, who plays for the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer, also needed eight stitches to close a cut above the eye. He did not need surgery and his vision is fine, Crew spokesman Jeff Wuerth said Tuesday.

McBride fractured an orbital bone in a collision with a Brazilian defender in the 26th minute of a CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal last Wednesday in Miami. Brazil beat the Americans 2-1.

It's the fourth time that McBride, the Crew's leading scorer, sustained a facial injury in the last five seasons.

He fractured his left cheekbone in 1999, his right cheekbone the following year and injured the orbital bone in his right eye in a collision during a World Cup qualifier against Mexico at Crew Stadium in 2001.

Default Mc Bride to the Blackburn?

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"We have made an offer to his agent and we are still waiting to hear."
-- Blackburn coach Graeme Souness on Columbus Crew forward Brian
McBride. (Lancashire Evening Telegraph.)

"There have been two approaches on the part of the people of Leicester City.
But it's very difficult to confirm anything."
-- L.A. forward Carlos Ruiz (rojomania.com, a web site of Guatemalan
club Municpal)

"We have had him watched but we are not going to do anything about it."
-- Leicester coach Micky Adams (SkySports)

"This trade was completely out of my control. At the end of the day I
did my job. I did it on the field and off the field. When I came here
four years ago I wanted to give a hundred percent in everything I do
and I'm leaving an All-Star and Humanitarian of the year, so I feel I
did that."
-- MetroStars defender Steve Jolley, whose trade to Dallas is
expected to be announced Thursday. (North Jersey Herald News)

"We're still trying to get some logistical things together."
-- Dallas general manager Greg Elliott, who stopped short of
confirming that the Burn's new head coach will be assistant Colin
Clarke. (Dallas Morning News)

"I enjoyed all the times I spent under him during training sessions.
When I did work with him, I felt like he had some insights that I
hadn't heard before."
-- Dallas forward Jason Kreis on Colin Clarke (Dallas Morning News)

Default Mc Bride to Blackburn?

Rovers Resuscitate McBride Bid 13/01/04

Blackburn have apparently switched their line of thinking in the matter of acquiring Columbus Crew star Brian McBride and reportedly have tabled a straight transfer bid.

The only party not to agree yet is the striker and Crew general manager Jim Smith expects the deal to sink or swim within a couple days.

"Every year, the transfer window opens and it seems Brian's name comes up," he told local NewsChannel 4. “(Blackburn) are having a hard time scoring goals and Brian is a proven goal scorer both in MLS and overseas.”

”Blackburn could definitely afford the transfer fee - I should know more tomorrow or Wednesday."

The personal terms offer is said to be for three tears at over $1 million per.

Default The official TalkSoccer Brian McBride thread:

Sources within MLS have confirmed that the league and Blackburn Rovers have finalised the sale of Columbus striker Brian McBride to the Premiership club for an immediate transfer.
A reported three-year contract worth around $1,400,000 annually (750,000 pounds) is to be paid to McBride, with MLS garnering a transfer fee of under $1,000,000 for the 31 year-old U.S. international striker.

copyright © MLS
Although a work permit has not been granted as of this time, his past time in England and the amount of caps McBride has earned on the international level should leave the UK's Department of Employment happy.

Now the Columbus Crew must do without what simply can be said is the face of the young club, as McBride had been with the team since the first season. The team is expected to announce the trade in a press conference on Wednesday.

The Crew has been busy over the last 24 hours divvying up some of the salary cap space opened up with the transfer of McBride, bringing in veteran defender Robin Fraser and midfielder Manny Lagos in separate trades. The Crew also are expected to be given a "major" allocation by MLS with the transfer of McBride, which has happened in high-profile sales in the past.

As for McBride's new Lancashire home, he faces a quantity (perhaps not quality) of rivals for playing time under Graeme Souness. Veterans Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke have been inconsistent at best this season, as has Matt Jansen. The youthful Paul Gallagher is also in the mix, but McBride fills a large hole in Blackburn's squad in the role of a power "target" forward.

I was surprised to read that he was being sold in the first place. He had made it obvious in the past few years that he was no longer interested in a permanent move to England.

Has he changed his mind? Or is MLS trying to make some cash?

awhile back McBride said he didn't want to leave on a loan, if he was going to go back to england he wanted it to be long term.

Okay -- I must have misunderstood that. I thought it was in the press that McBride was the one who made the decision not to transfer permanently to England (in addition to the loan issues).

I also cannot find any quote regarding that anywhere on the net so I must be remembering that wrong. My bad -- ops:
