Gabriel Ferrari [Sampdoria]
the italian american was one of the key players on the national youth championship of the NY Red Bulls U 16 in 2005 , U16 Super Y national championship team, signed with italian Serie A Sampdoria and could make his debut as soon as tomorrow against Chievo to the second leg of the italian cup quarter finals.
Ferrari 18, has planned on attending Connecticut University, but would have lost his College eligibility if he signed an MLS contract once he left the Academy. Instead he's giving up College and taking a chance in Europe.
If the homegrown rule in place, he would have been a candidate to move up to the Senior squad. Savares youth director talk to Sampdoria and they are hoping he can play soon.
With MLS puttng an emphasis on a youth system, where each club will have teams in various age groups, homegrown players won't be subject to league drafts or other distribution procedures, and the players won't immediately lose their college eligibility.
When time comes players such as Ferrari won't be lost once they turn 18, but rather nurtured and developed into MLS players

It's frustrating because no team sports here in the US are built like the way soccer is around the world and it's terrible seeing some of these kids that should be playing in the MLS.

It'll take a while but I think eventually we'll get up to par with European leagues. Remember, once upon a time, the NBA and the USA was basically unbeatable at the sport of basketball. Now, NBA teams go to Europe and its pretty much an even match up, and the USA no longer can roll over every other country in the world like they used to be able to. And continuing, it's not even as if the best European players stay put. I mean look at Yao Ming from China, Tony Parker from France and Pau Gasol from Spain. The best come over but still their leagues continue to get better. But it takes time, I think we'll get there.

Interesting, it seems he was in a similar position to Giuseppe Rossi but chose USA over Italy.

I like Stezella, U 20 international with Columbus Crew
from Clifton New Jersey, 5, away from Giants stadium, the new rules would have him play for the NY Red Bulls

Thing is though, Rossi has more talent. And thus has a better chance at making the Italian Men's NT.
