A Brief History Of The Azores
If you have blue eyes and a fair complexion now you know why.
The Azore Islands were discovered by the Portuguese in 1427. At that time, they were uninhabited, but the Portuguese began to settle there in 1439. Then, later under Prince Henry the Navigator, the islands were colonized in some part by the Flemish, which is why so many of the people of the Azores have blue eyes and fair complexions. Later settlers included Jewish farmers, Bretons, and some Italians, English, and Scots. The island of Santa Maria was the first to be discovered and was where Columbus' crews paused when they returned from their first trip upon discovering America. The islands were named after a bird from the hawk family that was found in the area. The Azores are thought by some to be part of the sunken continent of Atlantis.
During the period from 1580 - 1640, the Azores were occupied by Spain and used as a staging base for the Spanish fleets. The seas surrounding the islands were the site of many a fierce sea battle between France and Spain.
The Azores were declared an autonomous, or self-governing, region of Portugal in 1976.

Azoreanos/Acoreanos
So instead of only being an Acoreano thread I decided to make it acceptable to all. All you have to do is post where you are from and then I will see which Portuguese place the most people are from so let me start.
Just post your place of birth.Place of ancestory, place your family is from, etc.

Hi I welcome posts from Portuguese people no matter where they live and especially if they are interested in Genealogy. Hope you bring back some pics.
I'm three generations removed fro Flores but I'm interested in finding out more about my "roots".
Basically what I know about our family was from an Aunt of mine who was close to my Great Grandmother who was the only person in our family who could speak Portuguese.
I gather our family originally came from Northern Portugal and sometime around 1860's settled in the Azores and eventually Flores. The family immigrated to California some years later where my mother, Aunts and Uncles were born. Mom married a Canadian and I was born in Canada so have dual citizenship.
That's my story and I'm stikin to it.

I was born on the Island of S. Miguel. Came to Canada when I was only 1yr old. Go back to the Azores as often as I can. Married and Azorian and when to my honeymoon in Madeira. What a great Islang too. Amazing and hot hot hot young ladies there. Man !!!
Portugal in general has so many beautiful places !!!! Being from an island though, I have a special fundness for islands.

Islands have a special magic and I'm hoping to visit Flores one day which I have been told as oodles of wild flowers from which the Island was named.
